Salford will be aiming to bolster their push for a playoff place as they host Newport County at the Peninsula Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts currently find themselves just outside the playoff places in 7th place, having picked up 53 points from their 34 league games so far this campaign.
The Ammies form has been uninspiring as of late, having only won one of their last five outings, drawing twice and losing twice. Worryingly, both defeats came against teams who are below Salford in the table in Tranmere and Swindon.
Last Weekend, Salford put on an impressive display as they travelled to Mansfield Town, who had won three league games on the bounce prior to the meeting. The Ammies put on a dominant performance as they thumped Mansfield 5-2. The Ammies ended a run of three games without a win thanks to a brace by Matty Lund and goals from Callum Hendry, Luke Bolton, and Theo Vassell.
Salford were unable to follow up an eye-catching victory at the weekend on Tuesday night as they traveled to face Barrow. Despite taking an early lead through a Ryan Watson penalty and dominating much of the games possession (63%), Salford were held to a point as Barrow recorded a second-half equaliser and the game finished 1-1.
Newport currently occupies 18th place in the table, having picked up 37 points in the league from their 32 games so far this campaign. The Exiles seemingly have nothing to play for this season, being 11 points above the relegation zone and 17 points off the playoff places. However, sometimes sides perform at their best without the pressure of relegation or promotion looming.
The Exiles are in the midst of a good run of form and they have only lost one of their last six league games, recording impressive victories against the likes of Swindon, Hartlepool and Barrow.
However, last time out County were left to rue several missed opportunities as they were beaten by Sutton. Goals from Coby Rowe and Alistair Smith were enough to give the promotion-chasing visitors all three points.
Newport are yet to record a win against Salford in the Football League in this fixture's relatively short history, having lost four and drawn two of the six meetings. The Ammies have won the past three encounters of these sides and have managed to keep three clean sheets in the past four meetings.
It was an enthralling game when these sides met at the start of the campaign in the reverse fixture. Entering the final 20 minutes the Exiles were 2-0 down but two goals in three minutes brought County back into the game and it seemed as though the points would be shared at Rodney Parade. However, substitute Ryan Leak’s 83rd-minute winner proved to be the winner as Saford secured a 3-2 victory.
Salford are home favourites ahead of this matchup and are currently priced @ 13/10, whilst an away win for Newport is priced @ 2/1. We are backing Salford’s top scorer, Matt Smith to score first @ 6/1. Smith has seven league goals to his name so far this campaign.
