Salford City are looking to rocket themselves further into the playoff discussions this weekend when they head on the road to meet with a Walsall side who have nothing to play for with just three games left to deal with.
Walsall have slumped into 15th ahead of this one, and although they can break into the top 12 over the next few games with just a four-point gap to deal with, recent form suggests they won't do that. In fact, Walsall have even managed to lose to Rochdale in the past few weeks, who sit 24th in the table and are all but relegated.
Further losses to Harrogate Town and Crewe Alexandra have seen the club concede 10 goals in April and score just three, as they also drew 0-0 with Carlisle United and 1-1 with Sutton United. Walsall's last win came just before the international break after beating Gillingham 2-0.
The club now sit with 14 losses from 43 games and they could drop lower in the table in the coming weeks with Crewe just below them having two games in hand. Nevertheless, they are clear of relegation by 12 points and they will be in League Two next season.
As for Salford, they could argue this is the perfect game for them, as Walsall have nothing to play for just as they have everything to give in the final few games of the season. Salford secured a 2-0 win over Hartlepool United on Tuesday, as Matt Smith and Louie Barry scored in the first half.
It keeps Salford in the playoffs with them now sitting in seventh and ahead of Mansfield Town by just one goal in the goals difference margin. Worryingly, however, Bradford City just above them in sixth have a game in hand to play, as do Mansfield below them. It could chuck Salford out of the playoff spots over time, but they have now won the fourth-most games in the league with 20 from 43 games.
Salford have lost twice in April so far after losses to Colchester United and Leyton Orient at home, and this has also seen them concede three goals and score none in those games. Neil Wood's men did manage to beat Wimbledon 3-2 soon after, however, and they should get another three points here because of Walsall's standing in the table.
