Germany vs Portugal Prediction

Germany are heading into this game as slight favourites, and their home advantage should be enough to give them a victory against a Portugal side who have faltered away from home in their recent matches.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side are coming into his game in great form, having been unbeaten in their previous eight matches in all competitions. Germany also possesses a strong record against Portugal in their recent meetings, with the home side having won the last five consecutive meetings between the two sides.

On the other hand, Portugal have shown signs of defensive frailty, as Roberto Martinez’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous four matches. Portugal are winless in their last three away matches, with two draws against Croatia and Scotland, and a further defeat against Denmark.

The recent meetings between the two sides, have provided goals with over 2.5 goals landing in five of the last six meetings between Germany and Portugal. Both teams have scored in five of the last seven matches involving Germany and in six of the previous eight games involving Portugal, so expect this trend to continue here.

With Germany being favourites because of Portugal’s away form, we are going for a 2-1 victory for Julian Nagelsmann’s side.

Germany 2-1 Portugal

Germany vs Portugal Preview & Prediction

The semi-finals of the Nations League take place this week, as Germany hosts Portugal in Munich on Wednesday (04/06/2025).

Date: 04/06/2025
Location: Allianz Arena, Munich.
Kick-Off: 8 pm

The UEFA Nations League resumes this summer, presenting a competitive alternative to international friendlies. The concept has been in place since 2018 and has seen three winners in France, Portugal and Spain.

Germany will see this tournament as a perfect opportunity to win silverware for the first time under Julian Nagelsmann, as his Germany side are expected to be one of the frontrunners for a potential World Cup success next summer. The home side have not won an international tournament since 2014, and in the semi-final stages of this competition, they are the only side to have yet won the Nations League.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side were dominant in their Nations League group, having accumulated 14 points from six matches, scoring 18 goals and conceding four. Tim Kleindienst had been key to Germany’s progression in the Nations League, having scored four goals in six appearances, averaging exactly one shot on target per game.

Portugal has a history in this competition, with the visiting side having been the inaugural champions back in 2019, led by the enigmatic Cristiano Ronaldo. Roberto Martínez’s side was also excellent in their group campaign, having accumulated the same number of points (14) as Germany. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to be a leading example for Portugal, as the 40-year-old striker has scored six goals in six appearances in the Nations League. Ronaldo has also averaged 1.7 shots on target per game.

The two sides last met in the Euro 2020 group stage, where Germany recorded a 4-2 victory with goals from Robin Gosens, Kai Havertz and two own goals from Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro.

Form Guide

Germany:

Germany are coming into this game in terrific form, having been unbeaten in their previous eight matches in all competitions. Julian Nagelsmann’s side have won five and drawn three of their last three games, with notable victories against Italy (1-2) and Bosnia & Herzegovina (7-0). Netherlands (1-0) and Hungary (5-0).

Germany have shown great potency in front of goal, scoring first in five of their previous six matches. Interestingly, Germany have also suffered defensively, having not kept a clean sheet in their last three games.

Portugal:

Portugal’s recent form has been rather indifferent, with the visitors having won only two games in their previous five matches in all competitions, with two draws and a loss. Portugal suffered a 1-0 loss to Denmark away from home thanks to a goal from Rasmus Hojlund; however, in the return fixture, Portugal executed a crushing 5-2 victory against the Danes. Portugal were taken to extra time in the second leg against Denmark in the quarter-finals of the Nations League. Still, late goals from Francisco Trincao and Goncalo Ramos secured the win for Roberto Martinez’s side.

Away from home, Portugal have struggled, with two draws against Croatia (1-1) and Scotland (0-0), and a further loss against Denmark (1-0).
