On Thursday night, the Netherlands hosts Spain at De Kuip in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League.
Date: 20/03/2025
Location: De Kuip
Time: 7:45pm
The last time these two sides met was back in November 2020, with the match resulting in a 1-1 draw as Donny van de Beek scored a second half equaliser after Sergio Canales had given Spain the lead early on in the first half.
There have been some memorable meetings between these two sides down the years, as they met in the 2010 World Cup final, where Spain emerged as 1-0 victors in South Africa thanks to an extra time goal from Andrés Iniesta. However, the Dutch did get some revenge on Spain in 2014 as they thrashed them 5-1 under the management of Louis van Gaal as Robin van Persie (2), Arjen Robben (2) and Stefan de Vrij all got on the scoresheet.
Since the return of Koeman, the Netherlands have been very results based rather than playing a particularly Dutch style of play, having reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 where they were beaten 2-1 by England. At that competition, they did have a favourable run to the semi-finals though, as they knocked out Romania and Turkey in the Round of 16 and quarter-finals.
Spain are arguably the best international side in the world at present when it comes to results and a style of play, as they managed to win Euro 2024 following their memorable 2-1 win against England in the final in Berlin where Mikel Oyarzabal scored a late winner. During Euro 2024, Spain knocked out the likes of Georgia, Germany and France in the knockout stages after topping a group consisting of Italy, Croatia and Albania.
On top of this, Spain are also the holders of the UEFA Nations League having beaten Croatia 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the 2023 edition after knocking out Italy (2-1) in the semi-finals thanks to a 88th-minute winner from Joselu.
