Liverpool's title defence thus far has been bleak at best, with Arne Slot's side 10 points behind current league leaders Arsenal as we head into the new year. Liverpool take on a Leeds United side who are in great form under Daniel Farke, spearheaded by a rejuvenated Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
A tactical tweak for the Premier League Champions has allowed them to be slightly more condensed and pragmatic in their tactical approach, and ultimately, that has led to the hosts rediscovering their form. Liverpool head into this game unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions, and having won their previous three league matches against Wolves (2-1), Tottenham (1-2) and Brighton & Hove Albion (2-0). Despite their run of form, they have still shown weaknesses in those victories, especially in games against Wolves and Tottenham, where they seem to be flustered when an opponent scores.
For Leeds United, an area to exploit would be Liverpool's frailties at set pieces. The Reds have conceded 12 goals from set pieces this season and scored only three, making them one of the worst teams in the Premier League from dead-ball situations. Leeds United's recent upturn in form has also come through a tactical change, with Daniel Farke opting for a 3-5-2, which has seen the Peacocks go five games without a defeat. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the in-form striker in the Premier League, scoring seven goals in his last six Premier League matches and was on hand to score past Liverpool in the reverse fixture at Elland Road.
The slight edge goes to Liverpool, as the home side has lost only twice at Anfield this season. While their performances will suggest that Leeds United can certainly grab a goal, expect Liverpool to edge out the visitors here.
Liverpool 2-1 Leeds
