The sensational season of Union Saint-Gilloise will get arguably its biggest test of the campaign when they play hosts to Bayer Leverkusen with hopes of securing their first-ever semi-finals spot in the Europa League after a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Saint-Gilloise have stunned Europe and Belgium this season with their pursuit to make history in the Europa League and in what is just their second back in the Belgian Pro League since 1973. In fact, barely anyone predicted them to get out of their group stage with an in-form Union Berlin, an in-form Braga and Malmo all looking to get out of Group D.
Saint-Gilloise managed to win four of those games, draw one and lose the other. It saw the Belgian Pro League side score 11 times and let in seven, as only Union Berlin beat them 1-0 in the group stages.
Quite incredibly, the club would draw with Union Berlin once more in the round of 16 after two matches already in Group D, as Saint-Gilloise ran out 6-3 winners on aggregate after a 3-3 draw in the German capital before beating Union 3-0 at home.
Last time out in the first leg against Leverkusen, Saint-Gilloise led for 41 minutes after Victor Boniface scored early in the second half for the away side. Florian Wirtz equalised at the BayArena to level the tie and it leaves everything to play for in this one.
Leverkusen are still the favourites to win the tie at 1/2 and 19/20 on the night, but given the form of Saint-Gilloise across the board this campaign, there is no reason why they can't go on and make it to the semi-finals.
Leverkusen are in fantastic form in the Bundesliga, however, as Xabi Alonso has managed to drastically turn the form of his side around in 2023. The club now sit in sixth and in the European spots for the first time this season with a two-point gap on Eintracht Frankfurt in seventh. Alonso's side defeated Frankfurt 3-1 two weeks ago, although they drew 0-0 away to Wolfsburg on Sunday.
