Both Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are far from the battle for the top spot in La Liga or the Bundesliga, more focused on returning to the Champions League next season. As for this round, the sides will be looking to give themselves a good foundation going into the second leg.
Atletico Madrid finished top of Group E, beating out Lazio, Feyenoord and Celtic. In six games, Atletico picked up four wins and two draws, finishing the group stage unbeaten and four points ahead of second-place Lazio.
Los Colchoneros have yet to get their hands on the Champions League trophy, but have made the 2014 and 16 Finals, where they lost both to biggest rivals Real Madrid. However, since the 2016 Final, the furthest Atletico have made it in the competition is the Semi Finals in 2017, where they again lost to Real Madrid.
Borussia Dortmund also won their group. In Group F, the “group of death”, Dortmund took on PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle, and in six games, Dortmund picked up three wins, two draws and one loss, finishing three points ahead of second-place PSG.
Dortmund have just one Champions League win to their name, all the way back in 1997, where they beat Juventus 3 - 1 in the Final. Since then, Dortmund have made another Final appearance, losing to their major rivals Bayern Munich in 2013. However, after 2013, Dortmund have only made it as far as the Quarter Finals.
Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund have met just four times in the Champions League, this coming all the way back in the 1996/97 group stage. There has yet to be a draw in this fixture, with both Atletico and Dortmund picking up two draws each.
This fixture hasn’t seen both sides on the scoresheet since 1997, with three of the four meetings seeing only one side finding the back of the net. However, both teams have been vulnerable in defence this season.
