Inter Milan host Arsenal at the San Siro on Matchday Four of the Champions League. Both sides are looking to continue their strong starts to the tournament.
Date: 06/11/24
Kick-off time: 20:00
Venue: San Siro
Arsenal will welcome a brief distraction from Premier League football as they shift their attention to European action. Their league form has taken a stumble as they have picked up just one point from the last nine available. This leaves them in fifth place, seven points off the top. However, in Europe they are already in a strong position to progress to the knockout stages of the competition with two wins and a draw so far. They have already beaten PSG this season, and have their sights on another giant this week.
It has been a much better few weeks for their opponents Inter, who are second in Serie A, one point off the top. They are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions, an impressive run they will have confidence in extending at home. In the Champions League they have the same record as Arsenal, two wins and a draw. The draw came in the opening fixture, a 0-0 away at Man City.
Defences may be on top in this game, as neither side have conceded a goal yet in the Champions League. Although, the Gunners have shown more vulnerability at the back in recent games. In the Premier League, they have not kept a clean sheet in their last six games and face a tough test in midweek. Inter have scored at least three goals in four of their last six league games and are led by Marcus Thuram’s eight strikes. Last season’s leading scorer Lautaro Martinez has netted five.
At the other end, the Italians will have to contain multiple threats in Arsenal’s attack. However, they have scored just three in their opening three European games. Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka have scored a goal each, and the pair are also the club’s top scorers in the Premier League with four and three respectively.
This will be the third European meeting between these two sides. They have not faced off since 2003 in the Champions League group stages, in which they won a game each. The away side won both games, with Inter winning 3-0 at Highbury and Arsenal winning 5-1 at the San Siro. Thierry Henry scored a brace that day whilst Freddie Ljungberg, Edu and Robert Pires were also among the goals.
