5 Championship Tips - 3/2/23

West Brom have been transformed as a team under Carlos Corberan, going from relegation contenders that had only won two of their first 16 games, but since have become playoff contenders, winning nine of 12 games, keeping seven clean sheets in the process and 6 of their wins being either 1-0 or 2-0.

Since Coventry beat Corberan’s West Brom just before Christmas, they have struggled, winning just one of seven games, which included twice conceding 4+ goals, including to National League side Wrexham.

Before David Wagner took charge, Norwich City had scored six goals in their last eight Championship games, which would’ve made this game against Burnley unlikely to be high scoring, but in Wagner’s two Championship games in charge, Norwich have scored four goals in each game, both away from home against teams who were in the bottom five for goals conceded before facing Norwich.

Whilst Norwich have had a great start to life under Wagner, Burnley have been unbelievable in the Championship this season, topping the table, winning their last eight games in the competition, and whilst Norwich might be able to find the net themselves in the scoring form they are in, Burnley have been like that the whole season, topping the Championship for goals this season and have scored 2+ goals in 11 of their last 15 games.

20-year-old Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo has been very impressive in the Championship this season, being one of the key players that has helped newly promoted Sunderland put in a challenge for the playoffs this season.

Amad has grown into the Championship this season, failing to score in his first eight appearances in the league, but in his last 13 appearances, he has scored seven goals which included the opening goal in a 3-0 Sunderland win when the two teams met at the Stadium of Light earlier this season.

Both Chuba Akpom and Matt Crooks have transformed as players since the appointment of Michael Carrick as Middlesbrough's manager, with Akpom being converted from a forward player to an attacking midfielder and Crooks being converted from a midfielder into a central striker.

Both Middlesbrough’s form of nine wins in 13 games under Carrick and Blackpool’s abysmal form of 11 games without a win should see both Crooks and Akpom get many chances to score, and both have shown under Carrick that they can find the back of the net, especially Akpom who has had 11 goals since Carrick came in.

Ben Brereton Diaz is currently on a barren spell in front of goal, failing to score in his last nine games in all competitions, but if there’s a team he should break this run against, it's Wigan Athletic, who are currently sitting bottom of the table with the worst defence in the league.

Wigan have kept just four clean sheets in 31 games in all competitions this season and have not kept one in 17 games, with 11 of them games including conceding 2+ goals, so if Brereton Diaz is going to find his shooting boots again, Wigan are currently the perfect team to come against.
