DFL Supercup: Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Prediction, Tips & Stats

On Tuesday night Borussia Dortmund take on Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.

Bayern qualified for the final of this trophy having won the Bundesliga for a record 31st time last season ahead of RB Leipzig under the management of Hansi Flick, whilst Dortmund beat Leipzig in the final of the DFB Pokal via a 4-1 scoreline thanks to braces from Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland.

Both sides come into this clash with different managers than they did last season, as Bayern are now managed by Julian Nagelsmann formerly of RB Leipzig following Flick’s resignation, whilst Dortmund sacked Lucien Favre earlier on last campaign, before giving Edin Terzić the job until the end of the season to allow them chance to find a permanent replacement, which saw the Black and Yellows opt for Marco Rose of Borussia Monchengladbach.

In the opening weekend of Bundesliga action, Rose’s side hammered Eintracht Frankfurt 5-2 at the Signal Iduna Park, with goals coming from Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard, Erling Haaland (2) and Giovanni Reyna inside 70 minutes. Meanwhile, Bayern could only labour to a 1-1 draw against Monchengladbach, Robert Lewandowski managed to equalise for the champions in the 42nd minute following an opener by Alassane Plea.

Lewandowski’s goal against Gladbach meant that he has now scored on the opening day of the season seven times in a row, a new Bundesliga record for the prolific Pole who managed the most goals in a 34-game format last time out, with 41 in 29 appearances.

We can expect to see Dortmund use the same line-up that saw them run out as 5-2 winners against Eintracht.

Summer signing Gregor Kobel will likely start in net with a fairly patched up backline of Felix Passlack, Axel Witsel, Manuel Akanji and Nico Schulz due to a series of injuries for the likes of Emre Can, Raphael Guerreiro, Mats Hummels and Thomas Meunier.

The only change that is expected in fact is Donyell Malen for Hazard who picked up an ankle injury against Frankfurt, which would give the Dutchman his full debut following his move from PSV this summer.

The Black and Yellows are most likely utilise the talents of Jude Bellingham, Mahmoud Dahoud, Malen, Reyna, Reus and Haaland in their midfield and attack as Julian Brandt is also injured.

Haaland has already notched up two goals and three assists to his name following Dortmund’s win against Frankfurt and is priced at 4/1 to score a brace against Bayern.

Bayern will also be coming into this match slightly light of fit defenders, as first-choice right-back, Benjamin Pavard is a doubt, as is Lucas Hernandez, whilst midfielders Marco Roja and Corentin Tolisso are unlikely to feature.

Nagelssman is expected to have Manuel Neuer in net, protected by a defence of Josip Stansic, Dayot Upamecano, Niklas Sule and Alphonso Davies, with the usual midfield of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka playing in front of the back four as well as Thomas Muller playing in behind Lewandowski, who will be looking to be supplied by Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry from the flanks.

Lewandowski will be looking to haunt his old side once again, the 32-year-old Polish striker has scored 22 times in 23 meetings against Dortmund and has the odds of 33/1 to score first in a 3-1 win for Bayern in the Supercup.
