Europa League Final: Sevilla vs AS Roma Key Stats, Insights & Markets

On Wednesday night, Sevilla faces off against AS Roma in the final of this season’s UEFA Europa League at the Puskas Arena in Budapest,

This promises to be a fascinating match-up, as the record six-times winners of this competition are facing off against a Roma side that are looking to earn back-to-back European trophies, having won the inaugural Europa Conference League crown last season under the management of Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is somewhat of a master when it comes to European competitions, having won the UEFA Cup and Champions League with FC Porto, as well as the Champions League with Inter Milan in 2010, on top of the Europa League with Manchester United in the 2016/17 season, however, even the ‘Special One’ could have his work cut out against a Sevilla side that is so good in this competition, as proven by some of the scalps that they have taken on their road to Budapest.

Each Sides' Road to the Final

Sevilla

Sevilla initially started off this season in the Champions League, however, they finished third in Group G behind Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund with five points to their name from six matches, just two more than FC Kobenhavn in fourth.

Ironically, their only win of the Champions League’s group stages came against Danish Superliga outfit, Kobenhavn, as they saw them off 3-0 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium thanks to goals by Youssef En-Nesyri, Isco and Gonzalo Montiel on matchday five, seeing them qualify for the Europa League’s Round of 32.

Along their way to the final in Budapest, Sevilla have shown that they are capable of pulling off some major scalps, having knocked out the likes of Manchester United and Juventus in the last two rounds of the competition under Jose Luis Mendilibar, having initially been managed by Jorge Sampaoli in the previous rounds.

Sevilla’s Road to the Final:

Round of 32: Sevilla 3-2 PSV

Round of 16: Sevilla 2-1 Fenerbahce

Quarter-Finals: Manchester United 2-5 Sevilla

Semi-Finals: Juventus 2-3 Sevilla

AS Roma

Roma featured in Group C of this season’s Europa League, having finished sixth in the Serie A last season, while their Europa Conference League triumph saw them win their first trophy in 14 years.

A lot of noise has been made about Roma’s net spend from last summer, having only spent €9.00m on incomings, managing to pick up some major coups along the way such as Andrea Belotti, Paulo Dybala and Nemanja Matic on free transfers, while selling €67.49m worth of players.

In this season’s Europa League, Roma finished second in Group C with ten points to their name from six matches, before going on to advance all the way through to the final with narrow scorelines past the likes of Red Bull Salzburg, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen. Notably in the second leg of their semi-final tie with Leverkusen, Mourinho’s men put in a defensive masterclass, eeking out a 0-0 draw with just one shot to their opponent’s 23, while having just 28% possession.

AS Roma’s Road to the Final:

Round of 32: Red Bull Salzburg 1-2 Roma

Round of 16: Roma 2-0 Real Sociedad

Quarter-Finals: Feyenoord 2-4 Roma

Semi-Finals: Roma 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Sevilla Odds

Winners Odds

Sevilla are priced at 17/10 to win the match itself, while also being priced at 13/8 to go ‘2 Up’. A win for the La Liga outfit would see them crowned as seven-time champions of this competition.

Goalscorer Odds

En-Neysri is the favourite to score first or last for Sevilla at 11/2, the Moroccan forward has been instrumental in their successes this season, having managed to score four times and create one assist in eight matches during this season’s competition, including goals against Man United (2) and Juventus.

The Moroccan’s four goals in this competition sees him sit two behind leading goalscorer Marcus Rashford, however, he would need to score three to beat the Manchester United man to the Golden Boot having already played 600 minutes, 40 more than the England international.

Card Markets

As far as yellow cards go, Argentinian left-back Marcos Acuna has been shown a total of 11 in 38 appearances across La Liga and the Europa League but, he is suspended for the final, meaning that his fellow compatriot Montiel is your best bet at 9/4, having received ten yellow cards in just 33 matches in the same competitions.

Erik Lamela has also been consistent when it comes to picking up bookings in this season’s Europa League, having been shown three cautions in just five appearances, hence, why he is also priced at 9/4.

AS Roma Odds

Winners Odds

Roma’s odds to win the final currently stand at 17/10, while their ‘2 Up’ Odds are 13/8, with the Serie A outfit arguably coming in as slight underdogs to emerge victorious from this final.

Goalscorer Odds

Dybala has the same number of goals as En-Nesyri in this competition, having scored four times in 10 appearances. On top of this, the 29-year-old has managed a total of 24 goal contributions in 36 matches across all competitions, seeing the ex-Juventus man priced at 6/5 to score or assist.

Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham will be looking to make himself a hero for Roma once again, as the 25-year-old looks to add to the nine goals that he has scored this season. Abraham has boosted odds of 4/1 to have two or more shots on target in 90 minutes.

Card Markets

As far as yellow cards go, the obvious Roma players to look out for are centre-back duo Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez, with the former picking up a total of 14 in 49 matches, seeing him priced at 11/8 to be shown a yellow card.

Meanwhile, ex-Atalanta defender Ibanez has been given 16 yellow cards in 47 appearances across all competitions so far during the 2022/23 campaign and is priced at 2/1 to be booked against Sevilla.
