Bayer Leverkusen vs Werder Bremen: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Werder Bremen make the trip to take on Bayer Leverkusen this Sunday in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen will be looking to wrap up what would be their first-ever Bundesliga title win, whereas Werder look to close in on a top half finish this season.

            Date: 14/04/2024

            Kick off time: 16:30

            Location: BayArena

The title race is firmly in Bayer Leverkusen’s control, with Xabi Alonso focused on a potential treble and unbeaten season. Werder Bremen, however, find themselves in the mid table, looking for a finish in the top nine in the Bundesliga.

Bayer Leverkusen currently sit top of the Bundesliga Table after 28 games. Leverkusen have 24 wins, four draws and are still unbeaten, leaving them on 76 points, 16 points above Bayern Munich - meaning that a win here would guaranteee them their first-ever Bundesliga crown.

Leverkusen have been amongst the goals this season, scoring 69 goals in 28 games, an average of 2.46 goals a game. However, Leverkusen have been the best in the league defensively, conceding just 19 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets.

Werder Bremen, on the other hand, sit down in 12th in the Bundesliga. Werder have eight wins, seven draws and 13 losses which leaves them on 31 points, five points from the top half of the table.

Werder have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring 36 goals which gives them an average of 1.29 goals a game. At the other end of the pitch, Werder have been much better, conceding 44 goals and keeping six clean sheets.

Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen have met 51 times in their histories, the first meeting coming back in 2001. Werder have a marginal lead in the fixture with 18 wins in comparison to Leverkusen’s 16 wins, a draw common in this fixture with 17 so far.

The last five meetings in this fixture have seen three draws and two wins for Leverkusen. Though three of the last five meetings have seen both sides on the scoresheet, the defensive capabilities of Leverkusen this season and Werder’s underwhelming attack may change this.

            Recent Form

In their last five games in all competitions, Bayer Leverkusen have five wins.

The second leg of the Europa League Round of 16 saw Leverkusen host Qarabag. Abdellah Zoubir opened the scoring for Qarabag and even with the red card to Elvin Cafarguliyev, Juninho doubled the lead for Qarabag. However, a goal from Jeremie Frimpong and an added time brace from Patrik Schick gave Leverkusen the 3 - 2 win.

Back in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen travelled to Freiburg. Florian Wirtz gave Leverkusen the lead in the second minute but Ritsu Doan equalised for Freiburg before the tenth minute mark. Adam Hlozek regained the lead for Leverkusen before halftime and Schick secured the 3 - 2 win, despite the late goal from Yannik Keitel.

Leverkusen found themselves behind at halftime after Maximilian Beier’s 33rd minute goal for Hoffenheim. However, with two minutes to go Robert Andrich equalised and in the 91st minute Schick popped up with a goal for a 2 - 1 win for Leverkusen.

The Semi Final of the DFB Pokal saw Leverkusen host Dusseldorf. Goals from Frimpong and Amine Adil along with a brace from Wirtz gave Leverkusen the 4 - 0 win and the spot in the Final.

The trip to the Capital saw Leverkusen take on Union Berlin. Following the red card to Robin Gosens, Wirtz’s subsequent penalty was the only goal of the game in the 1 - 0 win for Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen also take on West Ham in the Europa League Quarter Finals this Thursday.

In their last five games in all competitions, Werder Bremen have one draw and four losses.

Hoffenheim took a 2 - 0 lead into halftime following the brace from Beier, though there was drama as Marius Bulter was sent off for Hoffenheim with just 15 minutes to go. However, the goal from Alvero came too late as Hoffenheim secured a 2 - 1 win.

The visit from Borussia Dortmund saw Donyell Malen and Jadon Sancho score to give the visitors the 2 - 0 lead at halftime, though a man down with Marcel Sabitzer’s red card. Njinmah did score late on, but Dortmund held on for the 2 - 1 win.

After a goalless first half, Yorbe Vertessen and Brenden Aaronson both scored within two minutes of each other to give Union Berlin the 2 - 0 lead early in the second half. Mitchell Weiser got Werder on the scoresheet, but once again they slumped to a 2 - 1 loss.

The visit from Wolfsburg was a fiery affair that saw both sides down to ten men. Jung was sent off for Werder in the first half and Maxence Lacroix was sent off for Wolfsburg in the second half, after his goal in the first half added time. Lovro Majer also scored late on for a 2 - 0 win for Wolfsburg.

The last time out for Werder was against Eintracht Frankfurt. Milos Veljkovic opened the scoring for Werder but Tuta equalised for Frankfurt, just minutes after the red card to Werder’s Jens Stage. Tuta was also sent off for Frankfurt as the game finished in a 1 - 1 draw.
