The end of the football season is vastly approaching as the cup finals across Europe’s top five domestic leagues will be of focus this weekend. The Coupe de France final takes place at the weekend as league champions Paris Saint Germain take on Lyon at the Stade Pierre–Mauroy.
Location: Stade Pierre–Mauroy
Date: 25/05/2024
Kick-Off: 8:00 PM
The Coupe de France pits two of the most successful league teams in France against each other. Lyon presided over a dominant period between 2000 and 2010 where the club won an unprecedented seven league titles in a row. In the previous decade, following the new ownership, Paris Saint Germain has been the dominant force in French football having won ten of the last 12 Ligue 1 campaigns.
The final at the weekend between these two sides presents Paris Saint Germain with yet another opportunity to record another domestic double under their ownership and their first domestic double since the 2020/21 season. The league champions were once again the runaway league leaders this season, having won the league title by nine clear points ahead of A.S. Monaco. Their recent league title was their third consecutive championship and their first league title under Luis Enrique.
One of the more intriguing stories surrounding this final will be the future of Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman has most recently announced his departure away from the Parc de Princes with an inevitable move to Real Madrid seemingly on the horizon. Mbappe officially signed in 2017 on an initial loan deal which became a permanent deal from A.S. Monaco.
Mbappe’s final league season has resulted in him winning yet another league title for Paris Saint Germain.
After 34 games played this season, Paris Saint Germain finished with 76 points from a possible 102 points. Paris Saint Germain averaged 2.23 points per game this season and obtained a goal difference of 48 – 22 clear of their nearest rivals A.S. Monaco.
Lyon this season has had a mixed campaign at times, however, they’ve recovered well to secure a European place. Lyon finished seventh in Ligue 1 which currently grants them a Europa Conference League place next season.
There could be an opportunity for Lyon to move into the Europa League reckoning for next season, which would potentially require them to win the Coupe de France. Regardless their position in Europe next season is already secured via their league position.
