Ajax vs PSV: Betting Tips, Match Prediction & Preview

The Johan Cruyff Arena hosts Ajax and PSV in De Topper this Saturday. Despite a hard start to the Eredivisie, Ajax are climbing their way back up the table, whereas PSV already have a strong lead at the top.

These odds are correct at the time of publication and are subject to change.

This Saturday sees one of the biggest derbies in the Eredivisie as Ajax takes on PSV. After so much turmoil following an uncharacteristically poor start to the season, a big win in the derby could mount a big comeback for the hosts.

Ajax currently sit fifth in the Eredivisie after 19 games. This sees Ajax with nine wins, five draws and five losses, leaving them on 32 points, two points from the Europa League Qualifiers and already 23 points behind PSV.

Despite having scored 42 goals in 19 games, Ajax are still falling behind the likes of PSV and Feyenoord on 60 goals and 52 goals respectively. The defence has been underwhelming this season, having conceded 35 goals in 19 games and keeping only three clean sheets, ranking them 11th in the league.

PSV, on the other hand, currently sit top of the Eredivisie. In 19 games, PSV have 18 wins and one draw, being the only team in the league yet to lose this season. This leaves PSV on 55 points, 13 points ahead of second-place Feyenoord.

PSV are ranked top of the Eredivisie in both attacking and defensive stats. In 19 games, PSV have scored 60 goals, meaning they average 3.33 goals a game. At the other end of the pitch, PSV have conceded only eight goals and have kept 12 clean sheets.

Ajax and PSV have a storied history, having met 183 times, the first time coming back in 1928. Not much separates the two sides, with Ajax having 81 wins and PSV having 70 wins, the other 32 games ending in a draw.

This fixture is usually a high-scoring affair, with 638 goals in 183 games. Ajax scored 331 of them and PSV scored 307 of them. In fact, the last meeting between the two ended in a 5 - 2 win for PSV.

          PSV Team News

Peter Bosz, on the other hand, only has Armel Bella-Kotchap and Richard Ledezma missing this weekend.

          Recent Form

In their last five games in all competitions, Ajax have four wins and one loss.

Ajax hosted Hannover 96 in a club friendly that saw the hosts unable to register a single shot on target, despite having more of the possession. Julian Borner opened the scoring in the fifth minute and goals from Havard Nielsen and Muhammed Damar gave Hannover the 3 - 0 win.

In another friendly, Ajax hosted Hannover once again, though this time came out on top. Brian Brobbey opened the scoring and Steven Bergwijn doubled the lead just two minutes later. Damar did get on the scoresheet for Hannover, but Ajax held on for the 2 - 1 win.

Brobbey opened the scoring again for Ajax in the 27th minute. Victor Edvardsen equalised for Go Ahead Eagles but in the added time of the first half Benjamin Tahirovic regained the lead for Ajax. Joris Kramer drew Go Ahead Eagles level again in the early stages of the second half, but a goal from Devyne Rensch gave Ajax the 3 - 2 win.

The visit from RKC Waalwijk saw Brobbey giving Ajax the lead again, but Michiel Kramer equalised for Waalwijk just six minutes later. However, another goal from Brobbey and goals from Kristian Hlynsson and Steven Berghuis gave Ajax the 4 - 1 win.

The last time out for Ajax was against Heracles. Jozz Hornkamp opened the scoring for Heracles but Brobbey equalised before halftime. Berghuis and Brobbey scored in quick succession early in the second half but Mario Engels kept Heracles in the game. However, Hlynsson scored to secure the 4 - 2 win.

In their last five games in all competitions, PSV have three wins, one draw and one loss.

Luuk de Jong starred in PSV’s clash against Excelsior, grabbing a hat-trick in a game that saw PSV register 27 shots with 15 of them on target. Derensill Sanches Fernandes did get on the scoresheet late for Excelsior, but PSV grabbed a 3 - 1 win.

In the Second Round of the KNVB Cup, PSV hosted Twente. Yorbe Vertessen’s early goal gave PSV the 1 - 0 lead at halftime. De Jong and Johan Bakayoko then put PSV into a 3 - 0 lead at the 60-minute mark, meaning Manfred Ugalde’s goal wasn’t enough as PSV held on for a 3 - 1 win.

Bakayoko opened the scoring in the seventh minute to give PSV the lead. However, in the second half, Othmane Boussaid grabbed a goal early in the second half to force a 1 - 1 draw.

In the Round of 16 of the KNVB Cup, first and second in the Eredivisie took each other on. Ajax were restricted to just two shots on target with 60% of the possession as Quinten Timber scored the only goal of the game to give Feyenoord the 1 - 0 win.

The most recent outing for PSV was against Almere. This time it was Almere with only two shots on target as de Jong grabbed a second-half brace to give PSV the 2 - 0 win and all three points.

          Footy Accumulators Prediction

Despite a recent upturn in form, Ajax aren’t likely candidates for the win this weekend. However, as history has shown, it is also likely to be a high-scoring affair. We predict Ajax 1-3 PSV.
