Getafe vs Girona Predictions & Betting Tips

Girona travel to face Getafe in what will be a crucial game for their title hopes as they continue to chase Real Madrid at the top of the table.

            Date: 16/03/24

            Kick-off time: 17:30

            Venue: Estadio Coliseum

This weekend’s La Liga fixture sees two sides who are enduring very contrasting seasons face off. Girona currently sit second in the league, seven points behind leaders Real Madrid. Three points for the visitors would mean they at least maintain the gap, or cut the deficit to four depending on the result of Madrid’s trip to Osasuna. They are also only a point ahead of third-place Barcelona, so any dropped points could see the giants take advantage and overtake them.

Getafe, in contrast, are comfortably in mid-table, an unlikely threat to the European places, but also safe from any relegation concerns. Occupying 11th, a victory may see them jump to as high as ninth, but defeat would open the door for Villarreal to leapfrog them.

With 59 goals scored this season, the hosts have the league’s second-most potent attack. Their opponents struggle in this regard, finding the back of the net just 31 times. Girona’s top scorer is Artem Dovbyk and he should be confident of adding to his tally of 14 goals when he takes on a defence who has not kept a clean sheet in seven games. Osasuna may have a bit more difficulty getting past a backline who have conceded once in the last three.

In the last five meetings, there has been nothing to split the pair, with the sides winning two games apiece and playing out one draw. There have been goals aplenty in recent seasons, there being a combined 12 goals in the previous three. The reverse fixture earlier in this campaign finished in the favour of Girona, who won 3-0. They opened the score early through Yangel Herrera, before Christian Stuani scored a second-half brace to complete the victory.

            Form Guide

            Getafe

In their last five games, Getafe have won once, drawn twice and lost twice. The mid-table side have found wins hard to come by as of late. Their only victory came at the beginning of this run of games, a 3-2 win at home to Celta Vigo. They took a 2-0 lead into half time, but conceded two goals in the space of 15 minutes late on to squander their advantage. However, Jaime Mata stepped up to score his second of the game and his team’s third to take three points in the dying minutes.

They gave up another lead in the next game, as they drew 1-1 at Villarreal. Nemanja Maksimovic put them ahead after 24 minutes, but this was cancelled out shortly after the restart by Albert Moreno. Barcelona scored four unanswered goals the next week to condemn Getafe to a heavy 4-0 loss. Raphinha, Joao Felix, Frenkie De Jong and Lamine Yamal were all on the scoresheet.

A 3-3 thriller with Las Palmas also saw them allow their opponents to come from behind, this time twice as the points were shared. Mata and Mason Greenwood put them two ahead, though the deficit was halved by Sandro Ramirez. Maksimovic then put them in a commanding position, 3-1 up at the break. The visitors were able to come back, however, as Sergi Cardona and Munir El Haddadi levelled the score. Their latest result was a 1-0 defeat at Valencia. Hugo Duro’s 40th-minute goal proved the difference.

            Girona

In their last five games, Girona have won two and lost three. Their title challenge has taken a step back in recent weeks, but they managed to take victory in their latest game. Last weekend, they hosted Osasuna, and they won 2-0. Goals from Portu and Savio in each half ensured they took all three points.

It was a good response to a disappointing defeat to Mallorca away from home. They played a fairly even game with the relegation battlers, but their opponents were on the right side of the result as Jose Manuel Copete scored the winner in the 33rd minute. Their inconsistent run is highlighted by a victory against Rayo Vallecano, in which they won 3-0. Viktor Tsyhankov put them ahead soon after the restart, before two more goals were added in stoppage time by Savio. Their opponents played the final 14 minutes with ten men.

This followed a 3-2 loss at Athletic Bilbao. Girona dominated possession, but went home with nothing. They fell behind just two minutes into the game, but managed to equalise early in the second half through Tsyhankov, but parity did not last long as Bilbao were soon back in front. A third was scored, before Eric Garcia pulled another back. However, they were not able to complete a comeback. The first game of this stretch was a crushing 4-0 defeat at title rivals Real Madrid. Their opponents took control of the title race with this result, and did so with goals from Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham (x2) and Rodrygo.
