Las Palmas vs. Girona: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

This weekend in La Liga presents a fascinating encounter between two clubs whose seasons have diverged markedly. Las Palmas, the newly promoted outfit, host Girona, the surprise package of the season, in a clash that encapsulates the unpredictability and drama of top-tier Spanish football. As these teams prepare to meet at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, their respective aims and aspirations provide a rich narrative backdrop to the fixture.

            Date: 27/04/2024

            Kick-off time: 13:00

            Location: Estadio Gran Canaria

Las Palmas have acquitted themselves admirably in their return to La Liga. Currently positioned 12th with 37 points from 32 games, the Canary Islands club have effectively secured their status in the division for another season, standing a comfortable 12 points clear of the relegation zone. Under the stewardship of García Pimienta, a manager known for his methodical approach and keen tactical acumen, Las Palmas have been a model of stability and competitiveness.

The cornerstone of Las Palmas' success has been their robust defensive setup, exemplified by the performances of key players such as defender Sergi Cardona and goalkeeper Álvaro Vallés. Cardona, in particular, has been a revelation, combining solid defensive work with a capability to initiate attacks from the back, while Vallés has been a consistent performer between the sticks, pulling off crucial saves throughout the season.

As the campaign winds down, Las Palmas are not just playing for points but are laying the groundwork for the next season. Each match is an opportunity to refine their strategies and build a team capable of achieving more than mere survival. Their objective in the remaining games is to finish as high up the table as possible, providing a springboard for the next campaign.

In stark contrast, Girona's season has been nothing short of phenomenal. Positioned 3rd with an impressive tally of 68 points from the same number of games as Las Palmas, Girona have not only exceeded expectations but have shattered their previous best performances in La Liga. Under the guidance of Míchel, they have transformed from a mid-table side into genuine title contenders, even leading the league standings during the initial months of the season.

Girona’s success can be attributed to a blend of tactical ingenuity from Míchel and outstanding performances from several key players. Young Brazilian winger Sávio has been a standout, with his pace and flair on the flanks providing a constant threat to opposition defences. Yangel Herrera and Aleix García have controlled the midfield with a mix of defensive solidity and creative prowess. Meanwhile, Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk has been a revelation up front, netting 18 league goals to lead the team's scoring charts.

With a ten-point cushion over fifth place, Girona’s qualification for next season's Champions League appears almost certain. This achievement not only signifies a remarkable progression for the club but also enhances its appeal and financial standing in the competitive landscape of European football.

The recent head-to-head record between these two teams further underscores Girona's dominance, with three wins and two draws in their last five encounters. Girona have won both of the last two meetings, suggesting a psychological edge as they head into this match.

For Las Palmas, the challenge will be to break this pattern and assert themselves at home. Achieving a positive result against one of the league’s top teams would provide a significant morale boost and demonstrate their potential to compete at a higher level.

The tactical duel between García Pimienta and Míchel will be intriguing. Pimienta is likely to adopt a cautious approach, setting his team up to be compact and hard to break down, aiming to exploit any gaps through quick counter-attacks. On the other hand, Míchel will be aware of the need to maintain their attacking ethos, which has served them so well throughout the season.

The key battles to watch will be between Las Palmas’ defence and Girona’s attacking quartet, particularly how Sergi Cardona and Álvaro Vallés cope with the threat posed by Sávio and Dovbyk. Similarly, the midfield tussle will be crucial, with Herrera and García looking to impose themselves and disrupt Las Palmas’ attempts to control the tempo.

As Las Palmas and Girona prepare to face off, the match presents more than just a contest of points. It is a reflection of both clubs' trajectories and ambitions. For Las Palmas, it is about ending the season on a high and setting the stage for future success. For Girona, it is about cementing their status as the season's dark horses and taking another step towards European competition. This Saturday, all eyes will be on the Estadio de Gran Canaria as these two clubs continue to define their seasons in these final stages.

            Team News

            Las Palmas Team News:

Marvin Park will be available for selection once again after missing the game at Celta Vigo through suspension, but Julian Araujo remains out injured.

Saul Coco will once again miss out through suspension, but Las Palmas have an otherwise very healthy squad heading into this game, and the likes of Sandro Ramírez and Javier Muñoz will be pushing to come into the starting lineup.

            Girona Team News:

Joel Roca, Viktor Tsyhankov and Ricard Artero are all absent through injury and will play no part here.

It’s not expected that there will be many changes from the starting XI that began the game against Cádiz at the weekend, with winger Portu the only potential introduction to the starting lineup.

            Form Guide

Las Palmas are woefully out of form as they enter this game having lost all of their last five games. The five-game losing streak started with a 0-2 defeat to Athletic Club, which was followed by a 0-1 defeat to Almeria, a 1-0 loss to Barcelona, 0-2 defeat to Sevilla and a 4-1 defeat to Celta Vigo at the weekend.

The weekend’s loss to Celta Vigo was particularly damning given Celta were, and still are, hovering just above the relegation zone, yet Las Palmas were heavily beaten in a result that means they’re now eight games in total without a win.

Girona’s form has been solid on the whole as they come into this game having won three and drawn two of their last five matches. Their latest game was a comprehensive 4-1 win over Cádiz, where goals from Eric García, Iván Martín, Artem Dovbyk and Portu sealed a big three points.

Prior to that, Girona were beaten 3-1 away at Atlético Madrid, which came after a thrilling 3-2 win over Real Betis, secured by an Artem Dovbyk brace and a stoppage-time winner from Cristhian Stuani, which came after a 1-0 loss at Getafe and a 2-0 win over Osasuna - courtesy of goals from Portu and Sávio.

Girona’s form away from home is a concern, though, as they enter this one having lost all of their last five games on the road.

            Footy Accumulators Prediction

Despite their poor form away from home we expect Girona to come out on top here. Las Palmas form overall is simply woeful and it’s hard to see where their next win is going to come from. Were it not for the points they’ve already accumulated relegation would be a much more serious prospect. Las Palmas 0-2 Girona.
