PSG vs Lyon: Preview & Prediction

Lyon make the trip to the Parc des Princes to take on PSG this Sunday in Ligue 1. PSG will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the table, whereas Lyon need a win to get back in the top half of the table.

      Date: 21/04/2024

      Kick off time: 20:00

      Location: Parc des Princes

Lyon have had a season to forget and look to pick up a big win against PSG to get themselves in the top half of the table or even within a shout of European football. PSG, however, have a comfortable lead at the top of the table.

PSG currently sit top of Ligue 1 after 28 games. The Parisians have 18 wins, nine draws and one loss, leaving them on 63 points, ten points above Brest in second.

The Parisians have been the best team in attack this season. In 28 games, PSG have scored 65 goals, an average of 2.23 goals a game. At the other end of the pitch, PSG have been a little more inconsistent, conceding 24 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets.

Lyon, on the other hand, currently sit tenth in Ligue 1. In 28 games, Lyon have 11 wins, five draws and 12 losses which leaves them on 38 points, six points from European football.

Les Gones have been underwhelming in attack this season, scoring 34 goals, an average of 1.21 goals a game. Lyon have been similarly poor defensively, conceding 42 goals but keeping ten clean sheets.

This will be the 90th meeting between PSG and Lyon in Ligue 1 and will be the 104th meeting overall. PSG have a better record in the fixture with 46 wins in comparison to Lyon’s 26 wins. In fact, a draw is more common than a Lyon win with 31 draws so far.

The last five games in this fixture have seen three wins for PSG, one win for Lyon and one draw. Three of the last five meetings between the two have seen both sides on the scoresheet, though other than the recent 4 - 1 win for PSG, this has been a relatively low-scoring fixture.

Pierre Sage could have a fully fit squad this weekend as Duje Caleta-Car and Orel Mangala could return from a yellow card suspension and knock respectively.

      Recent Form

In their last six games in all competitions, PSG have four wins, one draw and one loss.

Vitinha and Kylian Mbappe both scored to give PSG the 2 - 0 lead at the 20 minute mark, but a goal from Arnaud Nordin and a penalty from Teji Tedy Savanier for Montpellier made it 2 - 2 at halftime. However, in the second half, Mbappe completed his hat-trick and was joined on the scoresheet by Lee Kang-in and Nuno Mendes in the 6 - 2 win for PSG.

Despite the red card to Lucas Beraldo in the 40th minute, both Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos scored in the second half to give PSG the 2 - 0 win, even with Marseille having seven more shots on target.

The Semi Final of the French Cup saw PSG host Rennes. The visitors were restricted to just two shots on target and 30% of the possession as Mbappe scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to give PSG the 1 - 0 win.

Back in Ligue 1, PSG took on Clermont Foot. Habib Keita’s goal in the 32nd minute gave Clermont Foot the shock lead at halftime. Despite having 73% of the possession and 17 more shots, it took until the 85th minute to find the back of the net, with Ramos rescuing a 1 - 1 draw for PSG.

The first leg of the Champions League Quarter Finals saw PSG host Barcelona. Raphinha gave Barcelona the lead at halftime but former Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele equalised for PSG just minutes into the second half. Vitinha then gave PSG the lead but another goal from Raphinha and a goal from Andreas Christensen gave Barcelona the 3 - 2 win.

PSG thrashed Barcelona 4-1 in Spain to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in three years, as Osumane Dembele, Vitinha and Kylian Mbappe all got on the scoresheet.

In their last five games in all competitions, Lyon have four wins and one draw.

Alexandre Lacazette opened the scoring for Lyon to give them the lead at halftime, but a quick turnaround from Toulouse saw a goal from Thijs Dallinga and a penalty from Vincent Sierro put Toulouse the 2 - 1 lead. However, late goals from Rayan Cherki and Jake O’Brien gave Lyon the 3 - 2 win.

After a goalless first half, Joseph Okumu gave Reims the lead ten minutes into the second half. Ernest Nuamah did draw Lyon level ten minutes later, but Lyon were unable to find the back of the net again, and had to settle for the 1 - 1 draw.

The Semi Final of the French Cup saw Lyon host Ligue 2 Valenciennes. A six minute brace from Lacazette and a goal from Gift Orban gave Lyon the 3 - 0 win and the spot in the Final.

Back in Ligue 1, Lyon took on Nantes. Matthis Abline gave Nantes the lead in the 16th minute, a lead they would hold onto until there was just 15 minutes to go. However, goals from Lacazette, Malick Fofana and Orban gave Lyon the 3 - 1 win.

The last time out for Lyon was against Brest. Corentin Tolisso gave Lyon the 1 - 0 lead at halftime but a seven minute period saw a goal from Steve Mounie and a brace from Romain Del Castillo give Brest the 3 - 1 lead with 20 minutes to go. Lacazette and Nicolas Tagliafico levelled the game with ten minutes to go, but in one minute both Tagliafico and Brest’s Pierre Lees-Meloud were sent off. Ainsley Maitland-Niles then converted his penalty in the 16th minute of added time to give Lyon the 4 - 3 win.
