European qualification is on the agenda in Serie A in the remaining games of the season. Atalanta hosts Roma with both sides still playing for the opportunity to be in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Location: Gewiss Stadium
Date: 12/05/2024
Kick-Off: 7:45 pm
Three points separate the two sides as it currently stands, although the advantage is firmly in the home side’s favour heading into this game. Both sides still compete in this season’s UEFA Europa League as a second avenue to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
Atalanta is all level with Marseille after the first leg, whereas Roma has to overcome a two-goal deficit away at Bayer Leverkusen who are chasing an unprecedented unbeaten treble.
An extra UEFA Champions League place is now available for teams in Italy upon UEFA’s ruling. The performances from Italian sides in Europe this season, saw the league rewarded with an extra place.
The home side enter this game currently sixth and if they win their respective game in hand against bottom-of-the-league Salernitana, they will leapfrog Roma into fifth place, ahead on goal difference. Atalanta also has an extra game in hand to play over Roma with the postponed game against Fiorentina still yet to be rearranged.
If the home side were to beat Salernitana as expected and if they were to beat Roma next weekend, they could find themselves with a three-point advantage and a superior goal difference with three games to play.
This would mean realistically, that two wins from their last three games if that scenario were to take place, would see them oust Roma in the battle for what is now the top-five spot in Italy.
As for the visitors, they would realistically need to win to strengthen their position in the top five. Roma are currently four points behind Bologna and if results fall in their favour at the weekend, they could find themselves one point behind although Atalanta will more than likely still have the game in hand to move above them on goal difference.
The previous meeting between the two sides finished all square in a 1-1 draw. Teun Koopmeiners' early goal was cancelled out by a Paulo Dybala penalty.
