Bologna vs Juventus: Preview & Prediction

The biggest game of the football weekend in Italy takes place in Bologna as the home side host Juventus in a key game between the two Champions League teams.

          Date: 20/05/2024

          Location: Renato Dall’Ara

          Kick-Off: 7:45 PM

Bologna and Juventus are both mathematically secure for the UEFA Champions League next season, having a seven-point advantage over Roma with two games to go. Thiago Motta’s journey as Bologna has been superb as he guided the unlikely outfit to their first-ever participation in Europe’s elite competition.

There could be a potential conflict of interest for this game as it pertains to Thiago Motta. If recent reports are to be believed Motta will be switching dugouts next season as he looks set to replace the departing Massimiliano Allegri.

The recent league meeting between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Stadium.

          Team News

          Bologna Team News

Lewis Ferguson is ruled out with a long-term injury for Bologna. Bologna have up to six suspensions including the likes of Viktor Kristiansen, Riccardo Calafiori and Remo Freuler.

          Juventus Team News

Danilo and Mattia De Sciglio are both ruled out with injury problems. Juventus have the likes of Timothy Weah and Manuel Locatelli suspended but they could be in line to make a return.

          Recent Form

The recent history between the two teams favours Juventus, as the hosts Bologna have a terrible record against their visitors in recent games. Juventus have won two out of the last five meetings, with the other three remaining games ending in stalemate.

This fixture has provided an average of 2.38 goals scored between the two sides. In the last 20 meetings between the two teams, Juventus have been victorious on 16 occasions. The four remaining games ended in a draw, with Bologna winless in those 20 games.

The last time Bologna beat Juventus in a competitive fixture was back in 2011. Former Juventus striker Marco Di Vaio scored twice against his former club Bologna that day. The last two games between the two teams have ended in a draw, both resulting in a 1-1 score-line.

The fixture at the Renato Dall’Ara last season ended in a 1-1 draw between the two sides, which was ultimately the same score at the Allianz Stadium this season. Bologna took the lead inside the opening ten minutes, thanks to a penalty from Riccardo Orsolini. Bologna held the lead until the hour mark when Arkadiusz Milik equalised for Juventus.

Juventus last beat Bologna way from home in 2021. Juventus were 2-0 winners that day thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Juan Cuadrado. Juventus have won four out of their last five visits to the Renato Dall’Ara with the remaining game ending in a draw.

In the last ten meetings between the two sides, there have been three dismissals – once from Juventus and twice for Bologna. Interestingly, Bologna’s two dismissals were in the same game in 2022. Bologna held on for a 1-1 draw after Gary Medel and Adama Soumaoro were given their marching orders.

Bologna heads into this game with Juventus having been unbeaten in their last five league games. Bologna has won twice and drawn the remaining three games in Serie A. The home side have averaged 1.86 points per game overall this season.

Juventus will have trouble in exposing their home form in this game, with the hosts boasting a tremendous record at the Renato Dall’Ara. Bologna have played 18 games at home this season, having won 12, drawn four and losing the remaining two fixtures.

Interestingly, their recent home record is worse off than their away record. Bologna have won twice in their last five home games, losing once, and drawing twice – whereas they’re unbeaten in their last five away games in general.

Bologna have averaged 2.22 points per game this season at home and have won 67% of their home fixtures this season. It is worth noting also that defensively they’ve been superb in front of their home crowd. Bologna has conceded 0.5 goals per game at home and has a 61% clean sheet record at the Renato Dall’Ara.

In their most recent home game, they drew 1-1 with Udinese. Martin Payero scored for the away side and Bologna were down to men because of a second bookable offence from Sam Beukema just past the hour mark. Alexis Saelemaekers scored in the 78th minute for Bologna to secure a vital point in their push for Champions League qualification.

Juventus have been considerably strong away from home this season. The Old Lady have played 18 games away from the Allianz Stadium this season, having won eight, drawn six and losing only twice of their 18 games played this season.

In recent weeks, however, the away form has been less than desirable for Juventus. In their last five away games, Juventus have not won a single game, having drawn three and lost the remaining two.

The away side have averaged 1.67 points per game away from home this season, with Juventus having only lost 22% of their league games on their travels. Juventus have a. 44%-win rate away from home and have kept clean sheets in 39% of their games.

In their most recent league game away from home, Juventus obtained a credible draw against a resurgent Roma side. Bremer scored for the away side cancelling out Romelu Lukaku’s 15th-minute opener for Roma.

The one player to look out for in this fixture is undoubtedly Dusan Vlahovic. The Serbian international has 20 goal contributions for Juventus in Serie A this season, whilst contributing a goal every 135 minutes.
