Inter Milan vs Lazio: Preview & Prediction

The league champions will have the privilege of lilting the Scudetto this weekend as Inter Milan host Lazio this weekend.

            Date: 19/05/2024

            Location: San Siro

            Kick-Off: 5:00 PM

Inter Milan still have an opportunity to record another achievement this season. The Nerazurri are chasing down a club record of 97 points as they currently sit on 92 after 36 games played. Inter Milan would have to win both of their remaining games against Lazio and Hellas Verona to achieve this feat.

Lazio can still mathematically secure a Champions League spot next season, although it is considered highly unlikely as Atalanta have a four-point gap with a game in hand.

Regardless of the result against Inter Milan, Lazio are assured of a UEFA Europa League place for next season. The away side would still want to finish ahead of local rivals Roma who are only a point ahead.

The recent league meeting between the two sides finished 2-0 to Inter Milan at the Stadio Olimpico.

Mario Gila is the only injury concern for Lazio. Luis Alberto is serving a suspension and won’t be available against Inter Milan.

            RECENT FORM

The recent history between the two teams suggests that Inter Milan has a marginal advantage heading into this game against Lazio. The current champions have won three out of the last five league games against Lazio – winning four in six in all competitions because of the two teams meeting in the Italian Super Cup.

This fixture provides an average of 2.72 goals per game scored between the two teams. In the last 20 meetings between the two teams, Inter Milan has the advantage by winning ten, drawing three times and losing the seven remaining games played.

Interestingly, Inter Milan is unbeaten in their last three meetings between the two teams, having also beaten their opponents in the Italian Super Cup this season. The last time either side achieved a league double over one another was in the 2016/17 season where Inter Milan recorded a 6-1 league aggregate win over their visitors.

In the last ten meetings between the two teams, there have been four dismissals between the two teams. Lazio have been the more ill-disciplined side having received three red cards to Inter Milan’s single one. Between 2015 and 2018 there were 11 dismissals in nine separate meetings between the two teams.

The most recent meeting at the San Siro was the Italian Super Cup in January. Inter Milan were the comfortable winners over Lazio that day thanks to goals from Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu and Davide Frattesi. The league meeting at the San Siro provided late entertainment for the neutral watching.

Lazio took the lead in the 30th minute through Felipe Anderson and were on course for the win. However late goals from Robin Gosens and a brace from Lautaro Martinez inside the final 13 minutes secured a comeback victory for the Nerazzurri.

The champions head into this penultimate game of the season on the back of some fine form overall. Inter Milan have won three out of their last five league games, having only lost once and drawn the remaining game.

Inter Milan’s home record has been nothing short of superb this season as they used it as a platform to secure their 20th league title. The home side have played 18 games this season at the San Siro, having won 14, drawn 3 and lost the remaining one. Struggling Sassuolo are the only team to have beaten Inter Milan in a league game this season, either home or away.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have won three out of their last five home games, having drawn the remaining two games. Inter Milan have a tremendous win rate of 78% this season and have averaged 2.5 points per game when played at the San Siro.

Inter Milan have been brilliant in the attacking areas this season at home, scoring 2.39 goals per game and more importantly, they haven’t failed to score in any of their home fixtures this season. The single defeat against Sassuolo even resulted in a 2-1 loss which kept up their remarkable record of scoring in every home game.

Defensively, San Siro has been a fortress this season with the Italian champions conceding only 0.56 goals per game and keeping a 61% clean sheet record in front of their home crowd. Our player to watch out for in this game is Lautaro Martinez.

The Argentine has 31 goal contributions across all competitions this season, having averaged 0.84 goal contributions per 90 minutes played.

Lazio has average away form in comparison to their opponent's considerably impressive home record. The away side have played 18 games away from the Stadio Olimpico this season, having won eight, drawn twice and losing the remaining eight games.

The visitors have averaged 1.44 points average away from home this season and have won 44% of their away fixtures this season. Lazio has been consistent in front of goal away from home, having averaged 1.39 goals scored per game.

The main concern for Lazio heading into this game is the defensive issues away from home. Lazio have kept a 22% clean sheet percentage on their travels this season, having conceded 1.33 goals per game. Interestingly, they have failed to score in 17% of their away games this season.

Lazio has been in great form in general having won four out of their last five league games. In their most recent league game, Lazio were 2-0 winners over Empoli thanks to goals from Patric and Mattias Vecino.
