Serie A is where the action is this weekend as Juventus host Fiorentina in the latter stages of the season. Juventus are chasing UEFA Champions League qualification whilst Fiorentina are still within a shout of making next season’s UEFA Europa League.
Date: 07/04/2024
Location: Allianz Stadium
Kick-off: 19:45 pm
The Old Lady missed out on European qualification last season because of sanctions but this season with the sanctions lifted they have made great progress in Serie A this season. Juventus are also in the semi-final of the Coppa Italia in a two-legged tie against Lazio. The hosts are currently third in the league after 30 games played.
A defeat wouldn’t necessarily alter Juventus in the league table because they have a five-point advantage over Bologna in fourth place. The home side have accumulated 59 points from a possible 90 points available. This gives the home side an average of 1.96 points per game. Juventus can still mathematically win the Scudetto but realistically it’s an impossible task being 17 points behind Inter Milan.
Juventus’ overall record this season reads 17 wins, eight draws and five losses. On average, they lose once every six games based on average. Managed by Massimo Allegri, this season they have been consistent in both areas of the pitch. In attack boasted by the talents of Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus have scored 44 goals in 30 games. This gives the Old Lady an average of 1.4 goals per game.
Defensively under Allegri, his reputation for being an astute tactician has been reflected in the statistics. Juventus currently boast the second-best defensive record in the league behind league leaders Inter Milan. The hosts have conceded 24 goals in 30 games – providing them an average of 0.8 goals conceded. Fiorentina are currently loitering in midtable as we approach the latter stages of Serie A. The away side are currently tenth after 29 games played, however, a win away from Juventus could move them up to seventh if results go in their favour.
The visitors have produced inconsistent form this season, with an overall record of 12 wins, seven draws and 10 losses from the 29 games played. Fiorentina have obtained 43 points so far this season and have averaged 1.48 goals per game.
The attacking side of the game has seen Fiorentina notch up 42 goals – an average of 1.44 goals per game. Defensively they’ve conceded 34 goals, an average of 1.1 goals per game.
Despite their inconsistencies in the league, Fiorentina have two routes into Europe next season. Although the league seems an unlikely option, the away side are still in the UEFA Conference League. Fiorentina will face Viktoria Plzen, with the winner of the competition qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
The recent history between the two teams suggests that Juventus are the favourites for this game. Juventus have won three out of their last five games between the two teams, including the most recent game in November. Juventus won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Fabio Miretti.
Fiorentina’s last victory over Juventus took place in 2022. Goals from Alfred Duncan and Argentine international Nicolas Gonzalez ensured a 2-0 win.
