Napoli vs Atalanta Prediction & Betting Tips

Atalanta make the trip to Naples to take on a Napoli team who are in direct battle with them for a European place. This game will have a huge impact on the league table.

            Date: 30/03/24

            Kick-off time: 11:30

            Venue: Stadio Diego Armando Maradona

Champions Napoli have endured a disappointing season in defence of their crown. There will be a new team lifting the trophy, with the Blues sitting all the way down in seventh. This means that they are locked in a battle to qualify for next year’s European competitions. Recent form has been inconsistent, and has allowed the teams ahead to maintain and extend their advantages. With 45 points, they are six behind Roma, who sit in fifth, so a win this weekend could be vital in their pursuit of them. However, a defeat could see them slip away even further, especially behind their opponents Atalanta.

The visitors occupy sixth, and are a place above their hosts, though they have played a game less. They are in a stronger position, four points behind Roma, but with a game in hand. Three points could put them just one behind, and could even see them threaten a top four place, with seven points currently separating them and Bologna. A defeat would allow Napoli to jump ahead and present a number of teams below the opportunity to cut the gap.

Francesco Calzona’ side have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 games. Atalanta have only been shut out once in their last 11, so there is a good chance they will find the back of the net. Teun Koopmeiners may be the biggest threat, with his 10 goals on the campaign leading the way for his club. Napoli also have some dangerous attackers, with Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia combining for 21 goals.

Napoli have dominated this matchup in recent years, as they have won four meetings in a row, all coming in the league. Atalanta won the two games before that, in which the games produced a total of 11 combined goals. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended 2-1 to Napoli. Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, though this was cancelled out by Ademola Lookman shortly after the restart. Eljif Elmas popped up to score the winner later on.

            Napoli

In their last five games, Napoli have won two, drawn two and lost one. It has been a season of disappointment for the Italian champions, with their inconsistencies highlighted in this recent stretch. This run began in excellent fashion as a trip to Sassuolo ended in a 6-1 victory. They had actually conceded the opener, but scored six unanswered to complete a rout of their opponents. Amir Rrahmani’s equaliser preceded a Victor Osimhen hat-trick and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia brace.

They followed this up with a crucial 2-1 win at home to Juventus. Napoli led twice in this one, as Kvaratskhelia and Giacomo Raspadori scored either side of a Federico Chiesa leveller. A winless streak ensued, starting with dropped points to Torino. The hosts dominated with double the attempts of Torino, but could not find the breakthrough until the 61st minute. However, despite being in the ascendency, they conceded three minutes later to end up with just one point.

A return to European action saw them take on Barcelona in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie in the Champions League. After drawing 1-1 at home, they travelled to Spain hoping to advance. Unfortunately for Napoli, they lost 3-1 to bow out 4-2 on aggregate. The Spaniards were up two early, but the deficit was halved before half-time. Robert Lewandowski added a third late on. Their most recent outing was another draw, but perhaps a point gained against the runaway leaders in Inter Milan as they drew 1-1. Matteo Darmian put the hosts in front in the first half, though Juan Jesus found the back of the net in the 81st minute to salvage a draw.

            Atalanta

In their last five games, Atalanta have won one, drawn two and lost two. It has been a difficult stretch for Atalanta which has seen them go winless in the league. Their only victory came in their most recent, a second leg fixture against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League. They drew the first leg 1-1 away from home, coming from behind after Paulinho opened the scoring. Gianluca Scamacca bagged the equaliser before half-time to leave the tie in the balance. The return leg ended in victory as they won 2-1 to advance to the quarter-finals 3-2 on aggregate. They fell behind half an hour in, but came out of the break quickly and turned it around through Ademola Lookman and Scamacca.

Between these two legs was a 2-2 draw with Juventus. Both teams missed the opportunity to leave with three points, with each squandering a lead. Atalanta did so first, after Teun Koopmeiners opener was cancelled out by Andrea Cambiaso. Koopmeiners returned the favour with his second goal after Arkadiusz Milik put Juve ahead. Two losses in a row against Inter Milan and Bologna started this run. Firstly, the 4-0 defeat to Inter, in which Matteo Darmian, Lautaro Martinez, Federico Dimarco and Davide Frattesi all got on the scoresheet. They fell 2-1 at home to Bologna despite making the breakthrough in the first half. Lookman opened the scoring but a Joshua Zirkzee penalty and Lewis Ferguson winner turned it around.
