Stuttgart vs. Bayern Munich: Preview & Prediction

This Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture sees third-placed Stuttgart square off against second-placed Bayern Munich in a match that encapsulates the contrasting narratives of both teams' seasons. With the end of the season fast approaching, this game promises to be more than just a formality, given the trajectories and ambitions of the two clubs involved.

          Date: 04/05/2024

          Kick-off time: 14:30

          Location: MHPArena

Stuttgart, currently occupying third place in the Bundesliga with 64 points from 31 games, have been one of the stories of the season. Under the stewardship of Sebastian Hoeneß, they have defied pre-season expectations to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League, thanks to the competition's expanded format. This ensures that the top five teams qualify, and Stuttgart's current standing means they cannot finish lower than fifth.

Hoeneß’s tactical acumen has been a pivotal factor in Stuttgart’s success. His team employs a rigid mid-block off the ball, which proves challenging for opponents to break down. When in possession, Stuttgart demonstrates dominance, effectively utilising the width of the pitch to stretch play and create opportunities. This tactical discipline has been complemented by stellar performances from key players.

The striking duo of Serhou Guirassy and Deniz Undav has been particularly lethal, contributing 25 and 18 league goals respectively. Their partnership upfront has provided Stuttgart with cutting edge and reliability in attack. Additionally, Maximilian Mittelstädt has enjoyed an excellent campaign, proving equally adept in his duties as a left-back and left-winger, bolstering both the defensive and offensive facets of the team.

Conversely, Bayern Munich find themselves in an unusual position. Having accumulated 69 points from 31 matches, they are second in the standings, but the season has been deemed disappointing by the club’s lofty standards. For the first time in over a decade, Bayern have conceded the Bundesliga title, with Bayer Leverkusen already crowned champions.

This marks a significant shift in the German football landscape, ending Bayern’s dominance which saw them clinch 11 consecutive titles. Despite the domestic setback, Bayern still have a glimmer of hope to salvage their season on the European stage, as they have secured a spot in the Champions League semi-finals where a challenging tie against Real Madrid awaits.

Manager Thomas Tuchel, who is set to depart at the end of the season, has had to navigate through a turbulent campaign. Nonetheless, there have been some bright spots, notably the performances of Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala. Kane, in his debut season, has been phenomenal, netting 42 goals and providing 13 assists in 42 games. Musiala continues to establish himself as one of the finest young talents in world football, impressing with his agility, dribbling skills, and scoring ability.

The tactical battle between Hoeneß and Tuchel will be intriguing. Tuchel, known for his meticulous approach and tactical flexibility, might look to exploit any spaces left by Stuttgart’s expansive play. Conversely, Hoeneß will be aware of Bayern’s threat on the counter and may opt to tighten up his mid-block to stifle Bayern’s creative outlets.

The key matchups to watch will be between Stuttgart’s strike force and Bayern’s defensive line. Guirassy and Undav’s ability to link up and penetrate Bayern’s backline could prove decisive. On the flip side, Bayern’s attacking prowess, led by Kane and supported by Musiala, will test the resilience of Stuttgart’s defensive setup.

Historically, Bayern have had the upper hand in this fixture, unbeaten in the last five encounters and winning the last two. This record will surely be in the minds of both sets of players and could play a psychological role in the proceedings.

As the teams prepare for this crucial encounter, the stakes are different but equally significant. For Stuttgart, a win would further solidify an already impressive campaign, while for Bayern, it is about redeeming a season that has fallen short of expectations.

          Team News

          Stuttgart Team News:

Josha Vagnoman, Samuele di Benedetto, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Nikolas Nartey are all out for the home side through injury, with not many changes expected following Saturday's game in Leverkusen.

The only change should see Angelo Stiller come back into the midfield after he missed the trip to Leverkusen through suspension.

          Bayern Munich Team News:

Bayern are amidst a mini injury crisis with Kingsley Coman, Sacha Boey, Bouna Sarr and Tarek Buchmann, while Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry are unlikely to play with the second leg of Bayern's Champions League semi-final with Real Madrid only days away.

Mathys Tel and Thomas Müller will both hope to start here, while Raphaël Guerreiro should keep his place on the left wing.

          Form Guide

Stuttgart's form is solid coming into this game as they boast two wins, two draws and one loss in their last five games. Their most recent encounter was a hugely frustrating one as they squandered the chance to be the first side to inflict defeat on Bayer Leverkusen, with Frankfurt sacrificing a two-goal lead to ultimately draw the game 2-2. Goals from Chris Führich and Deniz Undav had given Stuttgart a 2-0 lead, but Amine Adli pulled a goal back for Leverkusen before an inexplicable and needless foul deep into stoppage-time gifted Leverkusen a free-kick in a dangerous area, and from Florian Wirtz' dangerous delivery Robert Andrich eventually drove the ball home in the 96th minute.

Prior to that game, Stuttgart fell to a 2-1 loss away at Werder Bremen, a result that followed a 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, a 1-0 win away at Borussia Dortmund and a 3-3 draw with Heidenheim. Deniz Undav has scored four times in Stuttgart's last five games.

On home soil Stuttgart are unbeaten in their last thirteen games, winning three of their last five.

Bayern Munich are in very good shape coming into this one having gone unbeaten in their last six games, winning their last four on the bounce. Most recently, drawing 2-2 at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League via goals from Leroy Sane and Harry Kane. Their last Bundesliga outing saw Kane bag a brace for them as they secured a solid 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt with a heavily depleted squad.

Before that, Bayern thumped Union Berlin 5-1 thanks to goals from Leon Goretzka, Kane, Thomas Müller (X2) and Mathys Tel. That result followed a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the Champions League, with Joshua Kimmich netting the winner, a 2-0 win over Köln, thanks to Müller and Raphaël Guerreiro, and a 2-2 draw away at Arsenal, where Kane and Serge Gnabry grabbed the goals.

Away from home, Bayern have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five games.

          Footy Accumulators Prediction

This one is a stiff test for Bayern but they look to be peaking right at the tail end of the campaign. They're in very good shape and they have an excellent head-to-head record against Stuttgart, so despite the difficulty of this fixture we're backing them to come out on top in what should be a competitive affair. Stuttgart 1-2 Bayern Munich.
