Football fans aren’t always the kindest of people when it comes to Tweeting about players, often using the social media site to vent their frustrations about their performances if they’ve had a bad day at the office.
For one Feyenoord fan, it was lucky he chose to be nice in a recent tweet. Ben Dudley was boarding an EasyJet flight and believed he had spotted one of the club’s former players in Liverpool midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum.
It turned out to be him - although he couldn’t have imagined how he was able to identify him.
Believing that he had spotted the Dutch international, Dudley Tweeted: “I'm 99% sure Georginio Wijnaldum is on my EasyJet flight. Am I going to embarrass myself by saying Feyenoord with an awkward thumbs up on the way out? Almost certainly.”
It turned out that it was Wijnaldum, who was in fact sitting behind Dudley and watching him prepare a Tweet to tell his followers of his celebrity spot. What he didn’t realise is that Wijnaldum could see everything that he was Tweeting and recording a video of it to send out to his 1.6 million followers on his Instagram page, which saw Dudley inundated with notifications.
On the incident, he told BBC Sport: "I saw he caught me just before we took off and we had a laugh about it.
"When we got off I showed him my Twitter mentions exploding and he was laughing.
"We spoke about the Feyenoord-Ajax game on Sunday and he mentioned he'd be watching after training.
"Honestly I was pretty embarrassed about it but he couldn't have been nicer, really top guy. He had photos with plenty of fans. I forgive him for killing my Twitter mentions."
Wijnaldum’s Liverpool have the weekend off having already been eliminated from the FA Cup and return to action in midweek against Leicester City.
