The second day of ITV coverage of the Craven Meeting from Newmarket includes a key trial ahead of the 2000 Guineas.

Sovereign Spell is interesting off a light weight for the Kevin Phillippart De Foy yard. The three-year-old has race fitness on his side after returning with a win on the all-weather at Wolverhampton at the end of last month, easily putting five lengths between himself and the field.

Is yet to show that kind of ability on the turf, but he did run well over five furlongs on the Rowley Mile as a two-year-old, finishing a close second behind Rising Power.

Charlie Appleby has saddled the winner of the Wood Ditton Maiden Stakes in two of the last nine years.

Therefore, Crown Knott looks like an obvious angle in a trappy race. The three-year-old is well-bred, by Lope De Vega, and is a half-brother to Mc Loven, who was very useful over five furlongs as a two-year-old. William Buick is aboard, and looks very promising.

Next up is the Group Three Zyn Abernant Stakes. Time For Sandals makes plenty of appeal following a break for the Harry Eustace team. Ryan Moore is an eye-catching booking, and the high draw should suit his chances.

Was well-beaten in Group One company at the end of last season, but was the winner of last year’s Commonwealth Cup. Tends to start the season in good form.

Clues for the 2000 Guineas could be on offer in Thursday’s feature, as seven go to post for the Group Three Craven Stakes. Recent fitness could count for a lot, ensuring that Hidden Force holds the edge for the combination of Charlie Appleby and William Buick.

The yard has won two of the last five editions of the Craven Stakes, and he was an impressive winner on return over a mile when beating Venetian Prince easier than the one-length margin would suggest.
