13:25 - Cheltenham - Jasmin De Grugy

ITV’s coverage from Cheltenham on New Year’s Day gets underway with a handicap chase over an extended three miles and one.

Jasmin De Grugy should relish this step back up in trip after being well beaten over two miles and seven at Newcastle on reappearance.

Ran well in a big handicap at Punchestown in early May, and has winning form on good and soft ground, highlighting that he should enjoy conditions. Anthony Honeyball’s yard is in reliable form too, striking at 23%.

13:40 - Musselburgh - Fasol

Musselburgh is also covered on ITV this week, with a competitive handicap hurdle over two miles and four kicking off the action.

Fasol should still be on a workable mark for the Paul Nicholls and Olive Nicholls combination. The seven-year-old has won twice from seven starts over hurdles, including on his latest effort over a mile and seven at Wincanton.

This step up in trip should suit, and he represents a leading trainer among the winners over the festive period.

14:00 - Cheltenham - Il Ridoto

The big handicap chase on the Cheltenham card is next up, and plenty have leading claims. However, previous course and distance winner, Il Ridoto, should relish this test with little weight on his back.

On a low mark based on his win in last year’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, with Freddie Keighley taking off a further 7lb. Has run below his best on his last two starts, but wasn’t far away when eighth in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November.

Jumping errors cost him in the December Gold Cup, but he still looks well-handicapped now with a weight swing in his favour over Glengouly.

14:15 - Musselburgh - Jet To Vegas

Jet To Vegas could give the training combination of Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore success in the 14:15 at Musselburgh.

The six-year-old is lightly raced over fences, finishing second on both previous efforts this season. He was a close second behind Kingston Pride on chase debut in October, and this step back to two miles and four should suit his chances.

Was a winner of a point-to-point, and it's only a matter of time before he gets his nose in front over fences.

14:35 - Cheltenham - Gowel Road

Grade Two action is also staged at Cheltenham on Saturday, with the Relkeel Hurdle covering a distance of two miles and four. I’m a huge fan of Gowel Road, and this course specialist could go close once again.

Ran a stormer behind subsequent winner Kikijo at the November meeting, despite carrying top weight and running on the worst side of the track. Didn’t enjoy going back over fences last time, and a line can be drawn through that.

Has a staggering record at Cheltenham, which includes a second in this race 12 months ago, and this trip could suit the front-runner better in the twilight of his career.

15:10 - Cheltenham - Spike Jones

Spike Jones could give Samuel Drinkwater a famous Cheltenham winner in the 15:10.

The eight-year-old has won four from 19 starts over hurdles, and was last seen finishing a very close third behind Titan Discovery at the December meet. This ground will suit him perfectly on New Year’s Day, winning on a fast surface and achieving a career-high RPR at Lingfield in November.

Jumps efficiently and is a proven stayer up the Cheltenham hill. Next to no weight on his back, and Benjamin Lacey retains the ride.
