Portugal vs Republic of Ireland: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Preparations for Euro 2024 are drawing to a close for Portugal as they host the Republic of Ireland in their final friendly game before they depart for Germany.

Date: 11/06/24

Kick-off time: 19:45

Venue: Estadio Municipal de Aveiro

Roberto Martinez’ Portugal side will look to improve on the Round of 16 exit in Euro 2020. Cristiano Ronaldo will be playing in his sixth and potentially final Euros tournament, so he will be desperate to go deep into the competition and win it for a second time. They have plenty of talent across the squad, and have one of the most balanced teams. They qualified for this summer’s Euros by finishing top of their group with 10 wins from 10.

Republic of Ireland missed out on Euros qualification after finishing fourth out of five in their group. Only minnows Gibraltar, who ended on zero points, finished below them. From eight games, they picked up just six points, as they lost four of the last five games. This marks a second European Championship tournament in which Republic of Ireland will not participate, with their last appearance coming in 2016, when they were knocked out by France in the Round of 16.

Ronaldo will be the team’s main attacking threat, and he will be looking to build on a 35-goal season. There are a lot of other attackers who will be of notice for opposition defences, including the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao and Goncalo Ramos, who scored four goals and provided three assists at the last World Cup. Through the last international break, Republic of Ireland conceded just three goals in their last five games, so Portugal may not have as straightforward a night as expected.

These two countries have met just 15 times before, with Portugal enjoying more success with eight wins to Ireland’s four. Ireland are winless in three meetings, with their last victory coming in an international friendly in 2005. The last time they played was in World Cup qualifying in 2021. The game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Team News

Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo headlines a very strong squad. There is plenty of Premier League representation with the likes of Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Bruno Fernandes all involved.

Republic of Ireland

Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu will not play after missing the latter stages of the season through injury. Brighton striker Evan Ferguson could look to play a part, whilst Adam Idah may be involved.

Form Guide

Portugal

In their last four games, Portugal have won three and lost one. It has been a largely dominant stretch for Portugal as they look ahead to the upcoming European Championships. The run started with the penultimate matchday of the qualifying group phase, in which they took on Liechtenstein and won 2-0 away from home. They fielded a strong team, but were unable to take the lead until a minute into the second half. The scorer was Cristiano Ronaldo. Joao Cancelo scored a second 11 minutes later to effectively put the game to bed.

They made it two wins in a row with a victory over Iceland by the same scoreline in the final group game. Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes scored the first goal before Ricardo Horta added a second. Portugal dominated the game in both possession and shot attempts, and the game was a lot more comfortable than the final scoreline suggests.

Another win followed as they beat Sweden 5-2 in a friendly. AC Milan’s Rafael Leao broke the deadlock 25 minutes in, before Matheus Nunes and Fernandes tacked on two more before the break. Bruma made it four, though Viktor Gyokeres pulled one back almost immediately. Goncalo Ramos answered almost as quickly, before Gustaf Nilsson scored another consolation at the death. Their last game ended in their only defeat, as they lost 2-0 to Slovenia. Both goals came in the final 20 minutes of the game, as the Portuguese managed to muster just two shots on target. Before they host Republic of Ireland, they will take on Finland on Tuesday night and Croatia on Saturday.

Republic of Ireland

In their last four games, Republic of Ireland have drawn two and lost two. It has been a rough stretch for Republic of Ireland as they failed to pick up a single win and as a result miss out on a place in the Euros. This run began with defeat, as they narrowly lost 1-0 away to the Netherlands in the penultimate game of Euros qualifying. Ireland struggled offensively, mustering just one shot on target, and their opponents took advantage of one of their opportunities. Wout Weghorst’s 11th minute goal proved the slender difference between the two sides.

They followed this with a 1-1 draw in a friendly against New Zealand. It was an even game with both sides creating chances. Adam Idah opened the scoring for the hosts just before the half hour mark, but this was cancelled out around 15 minutes into the second half by Matthew Garbett. Another draw followed though this was against superior opposition in Belgium. However, it was a much weakened Belgium side as they drew 0-0. Neither team threatened offensively with the two sides combining for only three shots on target.

Their most recent game was another close loss as they were defeated 1-0 at home to Switzerland. They were restricted by their opponents to just one shot on goal, though they were able to concede just three of their own. However, Switzerland were able to take one of their opportunities, with Xherdan Shaqiri scoring the winning goal in the 23rd minute. Before they travel to Portugal, Republic of Ireland will take on Hungary in another friendly on Tuesday.
