A fascinating showdown is scheduled for the Group One King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday, as Calandagan and Jan Brueghel renew their rivalry.
However, the preference is for the latter to confirm the form of the Group One Coronation Cup. Aidan O’Brien’s runner out-battled the French raider on that day, and while Calandagan is entitled to run a bigger race, so is the ride of Ryan Moore.
Jan Brueghel has suffered just one defeat in six starts under rules, with that coming on his return over an inadequate mile and two.
Lacks the Ascot form of some of his rivals, but that doesn’t mean that the track won’t bring out further improvement. O’Brien and Moore are both in hot form, and last year’s St Leger winner appears hard to overlook.
