Saturday ITV Racing Tips - 31st May 2025

13:48 - Haydock - Grant Wood

A tricky 17-runner handicap kicks off the ITV coverage at Haydock on Saturday. Grant Wood is due a reversal in fortunes, and could be handicapped to play a role from a low draw for trainer Paul Midgley this weekend.

The six-year-old has finished second on both previous starts this season, including over six furlongs when narrowly denied by The Turpinator at Newcastle last month.

A return to turf poses questions, but he does have winning experience over six furlongs, and he’s an interesting each-way contender on Saturday.

14:10 - Chester - Bobby Bennu

In-form trainer Roger Varian sends Bobby Bennu to Chester on Saturday, with Silvestre De Sousa booked to take the ride. The four-year-old has been off the track since finishing third at Wolverhampton in January.

He has lots of solid efforts to his name over seven furlongs, which include wins at Thirsk and Lingfield.

Both runs came with a bit of rain in the ground, meaning that he could get his conditions, and on his peak form, he is a value play.

14:23 - Haydock - Shagraan

Plenty will have leading chances in the Listed Achilles Stakes at Haydock, but the unexposed Shagraan could be a contender at a bigger price with a decent chance.

The four-year-old for Michael Appleby was last seen chasing home American Affair at York, finishing much the best of his group on that day.

That was an eye-catching performance, and there could be more to come. Haydock favours his chances, and he has previous winning course and distance form.

14:40 - York - Loom

The first of two races from York takes place at 14:40. Low draws excel at York, meaning that Loom could be an unexposed contender to keep on side.

The three-year-old ran an excellent race over course and distance earlier this month when beaten just two lengths by the well-handicapped The Man.

That run was even more impressive after considering that he gave the field a head start, before making late ground in the final stages.

14:58 - Haydock - Shaha

John & Thady Gosden-trained Shaha could be the answer to the puzzle for the Group Three Lester Piggott Fillies’ Stakes. Estrange will be making her seasonal return, while Beautiful Love has become expensive to follow.

Shaha got off the mark at the third time of asking on the turf on her seasonal return at Goodwood, beating Scenic by an impressive length and a quarter in the Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes.

She relished the stamina test posed by a mile and four, and the unexposed filly could be set for another big effort in these deeper waters.

15:15 - York - Scenic

Ed Walker–trained Scenic should be ready to fire on her second start this season in the Group Three Bronte Cup Fillies’ Stakes at York. The five-year-old posted a solid return effort when narrowly beaten by Shaha in the Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes, and that form will be represented in ITV’s earlier race.

She excelled over the stamina-sapping distances last season, which included a very solid third in a French listed race over a mile and seven when beaten just a neck by Gaya Senora.

Back up in trip this weekend, and Saffie Osbourne is booked to take the ride.

15:33 - Haydock - Alyanaabi

The Group Three John of Gaunt Stakes features a number of experienced horses looking to get their careers back on track. Therefore, a chance could be taken on the progressive Alyanaabi for trainer Owen Burrows.

The four-year-old has won three from nine starts on the turf, and he made a pleasing return to action after being gelded at Haydock at the start of May when beating Tiber Flow by over a length in the Spring Trophy Stakes.

Has very respectable form in the book over further, but has some solid form lines over seven furlongs from his two-year-old season, which included a three-length second to City Of Troy in the Group One Dewhurst.

Could be an interesting contender in this sort of race with further progression on the cards.
