Jose Mourinho's Torrid Record Against Former Premier League Clubs

Latest News

Mourinho's record against former clubs

This upcoming gameweek, Jose Mourinho, will face one of his former Premier League sides in Manchester United at Old Trafford almost two years on from his dismissal with the 20 times champions.

Currently, the Portuguese has guided Tottenham Hotspur to four points in the league after losing to Everton on the opening day, beating Southampton a week later, and drawing their last fixture against Newcastle United.

Mourinho has managed more than 300 Premier League matches since he joined Chelsea in 2003/04, and won three league titles in two different decades with the Blues.

It is important to stress how Mourinho may has beaten United and Spurs many more times than stated in this article, however, he was not a ‘former’ manager at such point.

Mourinho's record against Chelsea for Manchester United

In May 2016, Mourinho was brought in as United manager following the dismissal of Louis van Gaal after two seasons. In his time as the Red Devils boss, the ‘Special One’ faced his former employees, Chelsea, seven times in all competitions, however, his record was quite poor.

The Portuguese only beat his former club twice with both victories coming at Old Trafford in the Premier League. The then United manager was defeated four times by the Blues, with two of these fixtures taking place in the FA Cup. Interestingly, all of these defeats took place at Stamford Bridge, where United also squandered a Premier League win, thanks to a Ross Barkley equaliser in the 96th minute.

Mourinho was relieved of his role at the club following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in December 2018, where he remained unemployed until joining Spurs 11 months on.

Mourinho's record for Spurs against United

The ‘Special One’ was appointed as the new Spurs manager in November 2019 after an abysmal start to the league saw Mauricio Pochettino relieved of his role. In his time as head coach, Mourinho has played United twice with this weekend's fixture aiming to be his third time lucky.

Despite only facing United twice, Mourinho’s stats already look dire against his old employees, with only one point from both fixtures. The defeat he suffered against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, took place at Old Trafford, losing by a score of 2-1, 13 months after he departed the Manchester club. This is an improvement from his record against Chelsea as a United manager, however, the stats away from home are more of the same.

With no win over his former clubs since beating Chelsea back in February 2018, this will be Mourinho's sixth attempt to end a five-game streak without a win against an ex-club. Currently, United are priced at odds of 10/11 to beat Spurs, whilst the ex-Red Devils boss is an almighty 29/10 to win at Old Trafford.

Mourinho's record for Spurs against Chelsea

Unfortunately, the stats against former clubs do not get better for the Portuguese manager with his results against Chelsea as Spurs manager.

In the two fixtures they have played against each other since the 57-year-old took over, Mourinho has suffered back-to-back defeats with only one goal scored in these matches. In both of these fixtures, Chelsea netted two goals past his Spurs side and were far the better time as the apprentice (Frank Lampard) beat the master.

This does not look good going into tonight's fixture against Chelsea in the EFL Cup for Spurs.
