Fred: Money well spent - or the next Kleberson?

Mourinho finally lands his man

Last season was a tough one for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United, despite finishing second in the Premier League. The Red Devils improved considerably in the league, registering an extra twelve points but the dominance of their rivals City left a real sour taste in the mouth for their supporters - along with an early Champions League exit and defeat in The FA Cup final. So something has to change.

United do boast an awful lot of quality but they came up short in important moments over the course of the campaign, so Mourinho will be eager to avoid a repeat. Already this summer he's signalled intent to go on and challenge their neighbours, with the big money signing of Brazilian Fred to re-enforce his midfield. The 25 year-old has been a man in demand for sometime so the Red Devils have done well to win the race for his signature after forking out around £50m - and he could well prove to be the first of many.

He's relatively unknown to many over in England but he comes over with a big reputation from his time with Shakhtar Donetsk, that's also earned him a spot in Brazil's World Cup squad. So what exactly can Manchester United supporters expect from him and what will he add to their midfield? Read our thoughts below and let us know your views on his arrival by tweeting us @FootyAccums!

Replacement for Carrick?

This summers a big one for Manchester United as they bid to strengthen and challenge both domestically and continentally. Their squad is in need of fine tuning and re-enforcements are needed in several areas, none more so than their midfield. Club stalwart Michael Carrick finally hung up his boots in May and his absence will hit them hard, especially with Marouane Fellaini set to depart on a free transfer too. Their departures would have played a big part in Mourinho's stepping up his pursuit to bring in Fred, who will be a real breathe of fresh air around the club. He's a different sort of player to the two previously mentioned men, but his playing style should make him a good fit at Old Trafford.

The retirement of Michael Carrick and inevitable departure of Marouane Fellaini has left United short in midfield

Fred makes the move across Europe after five years in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk. The Miners have a reputation for developing and enhancing South Americans, with the likes of Willian, Alex Teixeira and Taison just three of the Brazilians who've enjoyed great success there. Since arriving from Internacional, Fred has developed into one of the finest box-to-box midfielders, playing a huge part in Shakhtar's dominance of the domestic scene in Ukraine. He boasts 10 winners medals from his time over there so United are getting a real winner to add their ranks, which is very important for the dressing room - especially with Carrick retiring.

Where will he fit in?

Fred's versatility could be a huge asset to Manchester United over the course of the next few seasons. The 25 year-old can play in a two or three man midfield, along with going slightly further forward to support the frontman. Fans of the Red Devils will be hoping that he's the perfect foil for Paul Pogba to produce the kind of consistency that they've come to expect from him - after losing his way slightly at times last year. We all know how talented the Frenchmen is and having someone with as much energy and ability next to him in Fred could allow him more time on the ball to do what he does best.

Fred will add even more steel and solidity to United's midfield, with the prospect of him lining up alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic an exciting one for their supporters.

Standing at just 5 foot 7, he isn't the tallest of players but he uses his low centre of gravity to fantastic effect. We've all seen just how dominant N'Golo Kante has been and despite Fred being in a slightly different mould to the Chelsea man, we think he'll adapt seamlessly to the demands and rigours of the Premier League. Mourinho looks for certain attributes when recruiting new personnel, they need to work hard and be physically excellent - so the prospect of Fred lining up alongside Pogba and Nemanja Matic in a three-man midfield will be something that excites him & it could work extremely well.

Money well spent?

Manchester United's pursuit of the Brazilian is expected to have set them back around £50 million. He's certainly not a cheap addition but with some of the huge fees that've been getting thrown around he looks like pretty good value for money. He's an established international and at the age of 25 he still has plenty of room to grow as he approaches the peak years of his career. Manchester City were linked with him for some time so it shows that he's regarded pretty highly. He looks like much more of a Mourinho player than a Guardiola one too, with his ability to dominate and drive from midfield ideal for the 55 year-old's side.

Fred's versatility and all-action style of play should make him a huge asset for United

Physically he's very impressive, with him regarded as one of the finest box-to-box midfielders in Europe. He's extremely versatile, with the capacity to defend, create and finish - making him the complete package. His energy, pace, technique and power could make him a mainstay in the United engine room for some time and all in all we believe he could turn out to be a real coup for the Red Devils. At Shakhtar he improved ten-fold so to play alongside much better players in the worlds most demanding league, we can only see him going from strength to strength.
