Summer 2023: Free Agents XI

As we near the end of the club football season, there are a number of notable players that can become free agents in the summer. Below, we have selected our starting XI, while displaying their current market value according to Transfermarkt.

Here’s how we’d line up our starting XI in formation. Interestingly, at their highest market values, this squad would be worth a total of £536.85m, compared to its current value (Start of Season) of £255.8m due to their dwindling contracts.

Free Agent XI

Goalkeeper: David de Gea | Current Market Value: £13.2m | Peak Market Value: £61.6m

Spanish keeper David de Gea has been at Manchester United since 2011 and has since made 407 league appearances for the side. However, David de Gea will become a free agent this summer if he does not extend his contract with United.

Though there aren’t any apparent suitors currently, de Gea looks to be leaving United after alleged pay cut disputes. If the Spaniard does leave he would leave United with a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two League Cups, three Community Shields and one Europa League.

Right-Back: Alejandro Grimaldo | Current Market Value: £22m | Peak Market Value: £30.8m

There’s not technically an out-and-out right-back out of a contract this summer, Alejandro Grimaldo is a talented defender due to become a free agent who could adapt to another role along the back line.

Grimaldo’s usual position is left-back, a position he has played at Benfica since 2016. The Spaniard has made 191 Liga NOS appearances for Benfica and has scored 16 goals. In his time in Portugal Grimaldo has helped Benfica to three Primeira Liga titles, a Taca de Portugal, a Taca da Liga and three Supertaca Candido de Oliveira, making him a good signing for any team this summer.

Centre-back: Milan Skriniar | Current Market Value: £52.8m | Peak Market Value: £57.2m

Slovakian centre-back and Inter Milan legend Milan Skriniar has come to the end of his contract with Inter Milan and has allegedly already signed a pre-agreement with PSG. Skriniar has been at Inter since 2017, scoring ten times in his 193 Serie A appearances.

His strong defensive abilities has helped Inter to their first Serie A title in over a decade, the Coppa Italia, two Supercoppa Italianas and reached a Europa League Final. At only 28 years old, Skriniar will be a good acquisition for PSG.

Centre-back: Caglar Soyuncu | Current Market Value: £13.2m | Peak Market Value: £39.6m

Turkish centre-back, Caglar Soyuncu’s time at Leicester has seemingly come to an end with no movement on any contract extensions. Soyuncu joined The Foxes in 2018 and has made 94 Premier League appearances thus far, scoring three goals.

There’s nothing solid just yet, but Soyuncu has been linked to a range of high-profile clubs like Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan. Wherever Soyuncu goes, he’ll leave Leicester as an FA Cup winner and a Community Shield winner.

Left-Back: Raphael Guerreiro | Current Market Value: £17.6m | Peak Market Value: £35.2m

Raphael Guerreiro is also coming to the end of his contract at Borussia Dortmund, the club he’s been at since 2016. In that time Guerreiro has made 157 league appearances, has scored 29 goals and has provided 40 assists.

There has been interest in Guerreiro from English, Spanish and German teams. Of the Premier League, Leeds, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Wolves are reportedly interested. Guerreiro would be a steal for any of those teams as Guerrerio’s current trophy cabinet includes, two DFB-Pokals and a DFL Supercup as well as a Euros title and a UEFA Nations League title with Portugal.

Midfielder: Youri Tielemans | Current Market Value: £26.4m | Peak Market Value: £48.4m

Another Leicester player on this list, Youri Tielemans looks close to an exit from Leicester. Since his arrival in 2019, Tielemans has made league 131 appearances, scoring 18 goals and winning the FA Cup and Community Shield.

As a proven player in the Premier League, Tielemans has sparked interest from a number in England. Current league-leaders Arsenal and third-place Manchester United look set to battle it out for the Belgian’ signature this summer.

Midfielder: Ilkay Gundogan | Current Market Value: £22m | Peak Market Value: £44m

After seven years at Manchester City, Ilkay Gundogan looks unlikely to sign a new deal at City. In his 183 Premier League appearances, the German has scored 40 goals and has won four Premier League titles, an FA Cup, four League Cups and two Community Shields.

The German seemingly has another club already lined up with Barcelona allegedly ready to give Gundogan a pay rise if they can get him on a free transfer this summer.

Midfielder: Naby Keita | Current Market Value: £14.9m | Peak Market Value: £57.2m

Despite being at Liverpool since 2018, Naby Keita’s time in England has been plagued by injuries. As such, the midfielder from Guinea is currently out injured, with the injury he picked up playing for his country maybe ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Keita has made 84 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals and winning the Premier League, an FA Cup, a League Cup, a Community Shield, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Though there aren’t too many concrete transfer rumours, Keita has been linked to a move back to Germany.

Right Wing: Marco Asensio | Current Market Value: £22m | Peak Market Value: £79.2m

Marco Asensio’s time at Real Madrid has been somewhat underwhelming for the Spaniard. Asensio has been at Madrid since 2014 and has made 183 La Liga appearances and scored 35 goals.

The Spaniard has won three La Liga titles, two Supercopa de Espanas, three Champions Leagues, three Super Cups and four FIFA Club World Cups. The current transfer rumour market has linked Asensio with a move to Arsenal or a shock move to Barcelona.

Centre Forward: Marcus Thuram | Current Market Value: £28m | Peak Market Value: £35.2m

Marcus Thuram’s time at Borussia Monchengladbach could come to an end this summer with the Frenchman no closer to signing a new deal to keep him in Germany where he’s spent three years.

The centre-forward scored 34 goals in 108 games for Gladbach but has sparked rumours of a move to the Premier League. Both Arsenal and Manchester United are reportedly interested with the latter making contact with Thuram in March.

Left Wing: Wilfried Zaha | Current Market Value: £23.7m | Peak Market Value: £48.45m

Wilfried Zaha may finally leave Crystal Palace as a free agent this summer after years of the winger being constantly linked with a move away from Selhurst Park. Zaha has been at Crystal Palace permanently since 2015, making 272 Premier League appearances and scoring 66 goals.

However, there is interest from a couple of clubs with Arsenal and Marseille pitched as the two sides who will battle it out for Zaha’s signature this summer.
