Aston Villa vs Southampton Prediction

Aston Villa host one of the league’s leakiest defences on Saturday on the back of their first win in nine games. Despite patchy form from the hosts, Unai Emery’s side have only lost one league game at home whilst Saints have just one point on the road suggesting a comfortable win is on the cards for the home side.

Russell Martin’s men have now conceded three or more goals against Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester, Arsenal, Bournemouth, Manchester United, Brentford and Cardiff City in all competitions this season so given the Villa’s attacking quality, we expect the hosts to score plenty here.

Saints have been finding the net a bit more often lately themselves with a goal in five of their last six whilst Villa only have one clean sheet in their last nine suggesting the visitors could get on the scoresheet themselves. Aston Villa 3-1 Southampton

Aston Villa vs Southampton Preview and Prediction

Aston Villa welcome a struggling Southampton to Villa Park, having secured their first win in nine games last time out.

  • Date: 07/12/2024
  • Kick Off Time: 15:00
  • Location: Villa Park, Birmingham

Aston Villa’s win over Brentford in midweek was a much-needed pressure release on Unai Emery’s side. The Midlands club had gone eight games without victory in all competitions as the burden of juggling domestic and European football was appearing to take its toll.

A rampant first-half display against Thomas Frank’s men saw Villa get the job done early and secure their sixth league win to keep them within reach of the Top 4. It was a vital confidence booster and they’ll be glad for a game against the league’s bottom side in order to keep that momentum going.

Visitors Saints are having a miserable time of it on their return to the Premier League as they already sit seven points adrift of safety. November did see a sprinkle of hope as they earned their first league win of the season over Everton, took a point away at European contenders Brighton and narrowly lost at home to league leaders Liverpool. Any optimism was short-lived though as they were hammered 5-1 by Chelsea in midweek with a red card to Jack Stephens (his second of the season) compounding their misery.

Whilst Aston Villa have had a mixed campaign themselves so far, their only defeat at Villa Park in the league came to Arsenal back in August whilst in the Champions League, they’ve defeated Bayern Munich and held Juventus to a draw on their own patch making this a tall order for Saints.

Much has been made of Russell Martin’s playing style and how a failure to adapt is costing Southampton but in reality, they are bereft of quality across the park at this level. Young Tyler Dibling has certainly impressed with his ball-carrying skills whilst Mateus Fernandes has also done OK in midfield but the squad feels too weak to compete at this standard.

Only Wolves have conceded more goals than Southampton’s 30 so the likes of Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers will be licking their lips at their chances of getting on the scoresheet. The pair are responsible for half of Villa’s league goals this season and both found the net in Wednesday’s win over Brentford.
