Ipswich Town vs. Aston Villa: Prediction, Preview & Betting Tips

Ipswich Town will host Aston Villa at Portman Road this Sunday in what promises to be an interesting matchup between two teams with contrasting ambitions this season.

          • Date: 29/09/2024
          • Kick-off time: 14:00
          • Location: Portman Road, Ipswich

After securing promotion back to the Premier League, Ipswich were almost immediately pencilled in as favourites for relegation and with just three points to their name thus far, the Tractor Boys are currently perched precariously above the relegation zone. However, their performances have not been without merit as Ipswich have displayed admirable resolve, managing to salvage points from games where they looked destined for defeat.

Their journey back to the Premier League has been fraught with difficult fixtures, and it is perhaps no surprise that they remain winless. Despite this, there have been signs of promise, and Ipswich might feel as though they should be better off than they are points-wise with expected goals (xG) average of 1.51 per game, which suggests that they are creating a fair number of scoring opportunities. Their challenge now lies in converting these chances into goals, as their inability to be clinical in front of goal has been a significant hindrance in their quest to secure points.

The transition from the Championship to the Premier League is notoriously tough, and Ipswich’s early schedule has been particularly unforgiving. Yet, Kieran McKenna’s side have shown resilience, and this fighting spirit will be crucial as they attempt to navigate the difficulties of a gruelling campaign. If Ipswich are to avoid an immediate return to the second tier, they will need to build on this determination and start picking up wins, particularly in matches in front of their own fans.

As Ipswich prepare to face Aston Villa, the scale of the task ahead becomes apparent. Villa, who secured an unexpected and excellent 4th place finish last season, have continued their strong form, collecting 12 points from their first five games. Under the astute management of Unai Emery, Villa have established themselves as one of the best sides in the league and fancy that they can secure a second successive top four finish.

Aston Villa’s attacking options are among the best in the division, with Ollie Watkins and Jhon Durán both in excellent form. Watkins, a player known for his relentless work rate and sharp finishing, has already found the net three times this season, while Durán, a rising star, has scored four goals, making him one of the top scorers in the league so far. Adding to this potent attacking threat is Morgan Rogers, a player who is beginning to fulfil his potential as a top-flight footballer. Rogers’ development has been one of the standout aspects of Villa’s last ten months, and his performances have added an extra dimension to their attacking play.

Rightly so, Ipswich are firm underdogs for this game, but they've shown plenty enough so far this season to suggest they're capable of taking points off even the better sides in the division. Their performance away at Brighton was evidence of their sturdy resolve, with the nascent centre-back partnership of summer arrivals Jacob Greaves and Dara O'Shea showing bags of promise early doors.

Aston Villa will be disappointed with anything but three points from this game, but there will likely be an acknowledgement that an away game against a competent newly promoted side can turn out to be a bit of a grueller.

Ipswich are extremely flexible tactically, and unlike many sides in this division they won't simply play right into the hands of the league's better teams and will do what they can to stifle and frustrate the wealthier, more established teams so expect a bit of that from McKenna's men this Saturday. That should, then, lead to a very competitive encounter, even we do fancy Villa to make good on their favourites tag.

          Where To Watch

          Team News

          Ipswich Team News:

The Tractor Boys could be without Kalvin Phillips for a second successive week as the former England international battles with a minor thigh injury.

Harry Clarke and Nathan Broadhead remain on the sidelines, while Chiedozie Ogbene could make his first start for the side with Wes Burns potentially dropping out of the lineup.

Predicted lineup: Muric; Tuanzebe, O'Shea, Greaves, Davis; Morsy, Cajuste; Ogbene, Hutchinson, Szmodics; Delap.

          Aston Villa Team News:

Aston Villa have a fairly lengthy injury list with John McGinn, Jaden Philogene, Matty Cash, Robin Olsen, Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings all out with injury.

Diego Carlos is also a doubt which could mean Lamare Bogarde comes back in at right-back.

Predicted lineup: Martínez; Bogarde, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Onana, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins.

Ipswich Town vs. Aston Villa - Form Guide

Ipswich's most recent outing saw them face a familiar foe from last season in Southampton. The Tractor Boys fell behind early to a fantastic goal from teenager Tyler Dibling and with Southampton on top they could have fallen further behind, with Cameron Archer in particular missing a big chance for the hosts.

Ipswich struggled to get a foothold in the game but remained competitive, and in the dying seconds of the game they were rewarded for their perseverance as captain Sam Morsy saw a clearance from a corner drop kindly to him on the edge of the box before taking a touch and launching a strike that deflected fortuitously into the top corner to secure a dramatic point for his side.

The draw means Ipswich have now recorded three draws on the bounce having shared the spoils in a 1-1 with Fulham and a 0-0 with Brighton, results that followed a 4-1 loss at the hands of Manchester City and a 0-2 defeat to Liverpool.

Aston Villa's most recent game saw a very much changed XI claim a 2-1 win away at Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Cup. The game was a fairly forgettable encounter but teenage winger Kaden Young provided a few promising moments and it was his powerful run down the wing and subsequent cross into the box that led to Emí Buendia opening the scoring.

Jhon Durán then finished the game off with a late penalty before the home sides scored a consolation in stoppage time.

Last weekend Villa faced off against fellow Midlanders, Wolves, in what turned out to be an entertaining encounter. Villa fell behind after an error playing out from the back allowed Matheus Cunha to open the scoring and despite Villa's best efforts, Wolves remained in the lead until the 73rd minute.

It was then when Ollie Watkins finally found the breakthrough that Villa had been threatening as his deflected shot found the roof of the net to square the scores at 1-1.

Villa weren't done there though, as defender Ezri Konsa produced a fine finish at the back post to make it 2-1 in the 88th minute before Durán concluded the game in injury time.

Prior to that, Villa beat Young Boys 3-0 in the Champions League, Everton 3-2 and Leicester City 2-1.

Ipswich Town vs. Aston Villa - Prediction

Aston Villa have had a strong start to the season as they sit 3rd in the league table having won all of their last five games in all competitions.

Additionally, they've also won three of their last five league games away from home, including successive 2-1 wins over Leicester City and West Ham United in their last two away trips.

While Ipswich have had a reasonably solid start, they are still winless and were quite fortunate to avoid defeat away at Southampton last weekend. Ipswich 1-2 Aston Villa.
