Date: 13/01/23

Kick-off time: 17:30

Venue: St James’ Park

This is a huge fixture for the title race as Man City look to make ground on the two sides above them, Liverpool and Aston Villa. Victory for City will see them move into second, leapfrogging Villa before they take on Everton the following day. It will also cut Liverpool’s lead at the top down to two points, with the Reds not playing this weekend.

Newcastle currently sit in ninth, 11 points off the top four. They face an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League in back-to-back seasons. By kick-off, they could find themselves in tenth if Chelsea win at lunchtime. If they win, they will leapfrog both Brighton and Man United into seventh.

Newcastle have had a good season in attack, with their 39 goals only bettered by four other teams. This includes a huge 8-0 win at Sheffield United earlier in the season. They have won nine and lost nine, which sums up the inconsistencies they have endured so far.

City, to no one’s surprise, are the league’s top scorers with 45 goals. They have also conceded just 21. Only Liverpool, with 18, have allowed less. Despite their recent stretch of poor form, Pep Guardiola’s side have remained in touching distance of the top two and will feel good about their chances of retaining their title for a fourth consecutive season.

In the reverse fixture, a Julian Alvarez goal was enough to secure all three points for Man City at the Etihad in August. However, the Geordies got their revenge a month later as they knocked City out of the League Cup with a 1-0 victory of their own through Isak. The Swedish striker is the club’s top scorer, with nine goals in 15 league games. Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon have also contributed seven and six goals each respectively, although the former will be missing through injury.

The last ten Premier League meetings have been dominated by City, with them winning eight and losing just one. The one victory for Newcastle came at the beginning of 2019, in which Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie scored to cancel out a first-minute opener from Sergio Aguero. The Magpies will be hoping to end an eight-game winless streak in the league against this weekend’s opponents.

Team News: Newcastle United vs Manchester City

Newcastle United Team News

Eddie Howe already has a number of long-term absentees, but has been handed a fresh injury blow as Joelinton limped off in the second half of the victory against Sunderland. Howe described the setback as ‘a big negative’ and it remains to be seen how much time he will miss.

Six players are out longer, with Nick Pope, Callum Wilson, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy and Matt Targett all absent for the foreseeable future. Sandro Tonali is serving his suspension for gambling breaches.

Manchester City Team News

Kevin De Bruyne made a welcome return to the Man City side as he came on as a substitute in their 5-0 win against Huddersfield in the FA Cup. Erling Haaland has not played in a month with a foot injury, but is closing in on a return.

Pep Guardiola has said he ‘doesn’t know’ if the striker will be able to face Newcastle. Elsewhere, John Stones’ injury-riddled campaign continues and he is still not back in training so it seems unlikely that he will be returning for this upcoming game.

Form Guide

Newcastle United

In their last five fixtures, Newcastle have won twice, lost twice and drawn once. The one draw was away at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup, but they were eliminated as Chelsea won 4-2 on penalties. They have lost two in a row in the Premier League, a 4-2 defeat at Liverpool and a 3-1 loss at home to Nottingham Forest. The result at Anfield doesn’t quite tell the full story, as Liverpool accumulated an xG of 7.53 in that game, the most ever in a Premier League game. In the defeat to Forest, they scored the opener through Isak before three unanswered goals from their former striker Chris Wood.

However, they got back to winning ways with a 3-0 win at the Stadium of Light against their arch-rivals Sunderland to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup. An Isak brace in addition to an own goal secured the victory.

Manchester City

In their last five fixtures, Manchester City have a perfect record, conceding just once. Two of their victories came in the Club World Cup as they beat Urawa Reds and Fluminense 3-0 and 4-0 respectively to lift the trophy and earn the title of champions of the world. It was a welcome distraction from the Premier League as prior to their trip to Saudi Arabia they had won just once in six games. Since their return, they have beaten Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park and Sheffield United 2-0 at home.

Last weekend saw them advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup, comfortably putting five past Championship side Huddersfield. Amongst the goalscorers was Phil Foden, who found the net twice.

Footy Accumulators Prediction

Whilst Newcastle enjoyed a great 3-0 win in the Tyne-Wear derby, their league form has been poor, which leaves them outside of the European places. Guardiola’s side seemed to have put their struggles behind them and have been boosted by the return of Kevin De Bruyne. We expect the visitors to continue their winning streak. – Newcastle 1-3 Manchester City
