This is a huge fixture for the title race as Man City look to make ground on the two sides above them, Liverpool and Aston Villa. Victory for City will see them move into second, leapfrogging Villa before they take on Everton the following day. It will also cut Liverpool’s lead at the top down to two points, with the Reds not playing this weekend.
Newcastle currently sit in ninth, 11 points off the top four. They face an uphill battle to qualify for the Champions League in back-to-back seasons. By kick-off, they could find themselves in tenth if Chelsea win at lunchtime. If they win, they will leapfrog both Brighton and Man United into seventh.
Newcastle have had a good season in attack, with their 39 goals only bettered by four other teams. This includes a huge 8-0 win at Sheffield United earlier in the season. They have won nine and lost nine, which sums up the inconsistencies they have endured so far.
City, to no one’s surprise, are the league’s top scorers with 45 goals. They have also conceded just 21. Only Liverpool, with 18, have allowed less. Despite their recent stretch of poor form, Pep Guardiola’s side have remained in touching distance of the top two and will feel good about their chances of retaining their title for a fourth consecutive season.
In the reverse fixture, a Julian Alvarez goal was enough to secure all three points for Man City at the Etihad in August. However, the Geordies got their revenge a month later as they knocked City out of the League Cup with a 1-0 victory of their own through Isak. The Swedish striker is the club’s top scorer, with nine goals in 15 league games. Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon have also contributed seven and six goals each respectively, although the former will be missing through injury.
The last ten Premier League meetings have been dominated by City, with them winning eight and losing just one. The one victory for Newcastle came at the beginning of 2019, in which Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie scored to cancel out a first-minute opener from Sergio Aguero. The Magpies will be hoping to end an eight-game winless streak in the league against this weekend’s opponents.
