Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction

Following the win against Manchester City, Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 16 games under Arne Slot this season and we expect this streak to continue against Newcastle. The league leaders have won their last seven in all competitions and their previous four in the league. The Reds have also shown great attacking potency in recent weeks by scoring first in six of the last seven in all competitions.

Newcastle United are without a clean sheet in their previous three and without a clean sheet in their last seven meetings with Liverpool. The Reds have won the last six meetings between the two sides and have no losses in the previous 15 meetings with the Magpies. Both teams have scored in six of the last seven meetings, so this could be a trend here – Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

Newcastle vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

Newcastle host Liverpool in this midweek Premier League fixture, with the result set to have a significant impact on both the race for Europe and the title.

Date: 04/12/24

Kick-off time: 19:30

Venue: St James’ Park

Arne Slot’s Liverpool team occupy top spot in the Premier League, with an eight-point lead over second place Arsenal and Chelsea. The visitors have won four league games in a row, including a huge 2-0 victory last time out against Man City who they now lead by 11 points. Another three points would strengthen their grip at the top, but if they were to drop any, there are several teams behind waiting to close the gap.

They make the trip to a Newcastle side who will look to recover from a recent stumble in form. Eddie Howe’s side are winless in their last two league games following a loss at home to West Ham and draw at Crystal Palace. It means they have fallen to 11th place on 19 points, though are just four points from the top four. An upset against Liverpool would be a statement win, and would also see them climb the table. A defeat, however, would leave them behind the chasing pack.

Goals may be hard to come by for the hosts, as they come up against the league’s best defence. Liverpool have conceded eight goals this season, and have kept four clean sheets in their last five in all competitions, including against Real Madrid. However, three goals allowed at Southampton showed signs of vulnerability, which could be exploited by a superior team in Newcastle.

Alexander Isak would be their main threat, though he could miss out through injury. Should he play, he will be looking to get past a backline who have just lost key man Ibrahim Konate for an extended period. The Swede has scored four goals, joint with Harvey Barnes.

At the other end, the home defence will have to be on top form to keep out a red-hot Liverpool attack. The Reds have scored in all but one game this season, and have found the back of the net at least twice in each of their last eight. Mohamed Salah continues to enjoy an excellent campaign with 11 goals, whilst he is supported by Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, who have contributed a combined seven strikes.

Liverpool have a superb record in this fixture in recent seasons, as they are unbeaten in the Premier League since 2016. In 15 meetings, The Reds have won 11 games, including six in a row. The Magpies’ last win against their opponents was a 2-0 home win in December 2015. Last season, Liverpool did the double over Newcastle, winning 4-2 in their latest matchup after a 2-1 away win in the reverse fixture. A late double from Darwin Nunez overturned an early Anthony Gordon opener.

Team News

Newcastle

Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth and Sven Botman are out with injury but are expected to return early in the new year. Newcastle were dealt a blow as Alexander Isak was forced off in their last game, with his availability for this game in doubt.

Liverpool

Defender Ibrahim Konate will miss weeks with an injury suffered in Liverpool’s victory over Real Madrid. Alisson Becker has missed multiple weeks but could be set for a return. Diogo Jota will also be assessed before the game. Conor Bradley was recently substituted with injury so his availability is in doubt.

Form Guide

Newcastle:

In their last five games, Newcastle have won three, drawn one and lost one. It has been a strong stretch for the Magpies with some big wins on the board. This run started in the EFL Cup, as they advanced to the Quarter-Final with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at home. Alexander Isak scored, adding to an own goal from Axel Disasi.

Another crucial victory followed, this time in the league against Arsenal. They were 1-0 winners with Isak on the scoresheet once again. Newcastle made it three wins in a row on their trip to Nottingham Forest. Despite falling behind early to a Murillo goal, second half strikes from Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes turned it around.

Their winning streak was snapped with a home defeat to West Ham. The visitors won 2-0 with goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Last time out they travelled to London to take on Crystal Palace. They drew 1-1, squandering a lead at the death. A Marc Guehi own goal put them ahead, but Palace equalised in stoppage time.

Liverpool:

In their last five games, Liverpool have been perfect, winning all of them. It has been a dominant stretch for Liverpool as they continue their excellent season. This run started with Champions League action, where they took on Bayer Leverkusen. They were emphatic 4-0 winners, with a Luis Diaz hat-trick and Cody Gakpo goal completing the scoring.

Aston Villa were the Reds’ next opponents at Anfield and it was another win, this time 2-0 thanks to strikes from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. After the international break, they travelled to relegation-battling Southampton. They won 3-2, with a second half brace from Salah turning around a 2-1 deficit.

A heavyweight clash with Real Madrid followed at Anfield, and they beat the Spanish giants 2-0. Alexis Mac Allister gave the hosts the lead before Kylian Mbappe and Salah missed a penalty each. Gakpo gave them some breathing room late on. Their most recent game was another huge fixture with Man City. They won 2-0 with goals in either half from Gakpo and Salah.
