            Southampton vs Tottenham Prediction

Both teams are struggling in the league in recent weeks, but we are backing Tottenham to return to winning ways at bottom club Southampton. The Saints have picked up just five points from 45 available and have gained one point since their only win of the season back in November. The hosts are without a clean sheet in their previous five, and have conceded first in all five of these games.

Tottenham are unbeaten in their last two meetings with Southampton, and have recorded impressive away wins against the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United. This fixture tends to provide goals, as over 2.5 goals have been scored in six of the previous seven meetings and both teams have scored in the last eight between the pair – Southampton 1-3 Tottenham

Southampton vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

Tottenham travel to Southampton in the Premier League with both teams in desperate need of a win following poor runs of form.

            Date: 15/12/24

            Kick-off time: 19:00

            Venue: St Mary’s Stadium

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side currently occupy a place in the bottom half of the Premier League table following a significant downturn in form. Since a stunning 4-0 win at Manchester City, Spurs are winless in three league games, and have lost seven overall this season. Last weekend, they surrendered an early 2-0 lead to Chelsea, eventually losing 4-3. They are three points adrift of 10th place Fulham and four behind Brighton in 7th, so a victory against Southampton is crucial to ensure they do not fall even further from the European places.

Southampton are stranded at the bottom of the table with just five points after 15 games. They are already eight points from safety, having won only one game all season. They are also four points behind Wolves who are a place above them, meaning they will remain 20th regardless of the result this weekend. However, the Saints need to pick up points fast, and at home this could be a good opportunity to do so.

They come up against an incredibly inconsistent side in Spurs, who can beat City away but also lose to Ipswich at home. Southampton should look to take advantage of a defence which is not only struggling on the pitch, but also has a number of injuries. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were both rushed back last weekend and appeared to suffer setbacks, making their availability for this game doubtful. Spurs have conceded six in their last three league games, and have kept just one clean sheet in their last 11 in all competitions.

On the other hand, Spurs have been excellent going forward this season. Their 31 goals scored is only bettered by Chelsea’s 35. Against the league’s worst defence in Southampton, it is hard to see them struggling in this game. Brennan Johnson has had a particularly strong campaign with six goals. James Maddison and Dominic Solanke have five apiece, with the latter netting last time out at Chelsea.

Since 2020, these two teams have met seven times in the Premier League. There has not been much to split them in this period, though Spurs have the edge with three wins to two. In 22-23, the season in which Southampton were relegated, Spurs were unbeaten against the Saints, with a 4-1 at home and a thrilling 3-3 draw on the road. In this game the visitors squandered the lead three times, with Southampton snatching a draw at the death through a James Ward-Prowse penalty.

            Southampton

Jack Stephens remains suspended after his red card against Chelsea. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is still out with a finger injury, though hopes to return before Christmas. Southampton could be handed a boost for this game with the returns of Jan Bednarek, Adam Lallana and Ebere Paul Onuachu.

            Tottenham

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains out long-term while Richarlison is not expected back until mid-January. Rodrigo Bentancur is still suspended and is eligible to return on Boxing Day. Yves Bissouma will also miss out after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season last weekend. Micky van de Ven is expected to be out after suffering a setback against Chelsea.

            Form Guide

            Southampton

In their last five games, Southampton have drawn one and lost four. It has been a dreadful stretch for Southampton, as they have failed to pick up any wins and are struggling in the bottom three. This run started with a trip to Wolves, in which they lost 2-0. Pablo Sarabia put the hosts ahead very early before Matheus Cunha doubled the lead in the second half.

A home game against Liverpool followed, and they would have been disappointed not to have got at least a point. They lost 3-2, despite leading 2-1 following a Dominik Szoboszlai opener. Goals from Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes put them ahead, but a Mohamed Salah brace won the game for Liverpool. The winless run continued at Brighton as they drew 1-1, though they came from behind with a Flynn Downes equaliser.

Back home they hosted Chelsea, though were on the end of a heavy 5-1 defeat. The pair exchanged goals in the opening 11 minutes, before the visitors pulled ahead 3-1. A red card for Jack Stephens only made matters worse, as Chelsea went on to score two more late on. Last weekend they lost 1-0 at Aston Villa, with Jhon Duran scoring the first half winner.

            Tottenham

In their last five games, Tottenham have lost two and drawn three. It has been a poor stretch for Spurs, with no wins. This run started with a European tie against Roma. They drew 2-2 after squandering a lead twice, including in second half stoppage time. They then hosted Fulham, in which they drew 1-1. Brennan Johnson’s opener was cancelled out by Tom Cairney, who was later sent off. Spurs were unable to capitalise on the extra man advantage.

Their downturn in form continued as they were defeated 1-0 at Bournemouth. Youngster Dean Huijsen scored the only goal of the game after 17 minutes. At the weekend they welcomed rivals Chelsea to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They lost 4-3, squandering an early 2-0 lead. Goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski put them ahead, before their visitors scored four unanswered through Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer (x2) and Enzo Fernandez. Heung-Min Son scored a late consolation.

Attention turned back to Europe as they travelled to Scotland to face Rangers. They were held to a 1-1 draw, though they fell behind to a Hamza Igamane strike. Kulusevski netted an equaliser with 15 minutes to go to save Spurs from defeat.
