          Tottenham vs Brentford Prediction

Tottenham have won three of their previous four home games against Brentford, and we expect this strong run of form to continue against their West London opponents. Neither side has kept a clean sheet in the last four meetings, with goals likely to be prominent in this one. Over 2.5 goals have been scored in four of the previous five meetings.

Yoane Wissa should be an influential figure in the Brentford attack, and he is the Bees’ top scorer alongside Bryan Mbeumo with three goals. Wissa has also registered at least one shot on target per game this season. Spurs were impressive in their 4-0 home win vs Everton, and we are predicting another victory here – Tottenham 2-1 Brentford

Tottenham vs Brentford: Preview & Prediction

Tottenham host Brentford in a London derby, with both sides confident in picking up a result in the fifth game of the Premier League season.

          Date: 21/09/24

          Kick-off time: 15:00

          Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

One win, one draw and two defeats leave Spurs in 13th place in the early weeks of the season. After a fifth place finish last year, they will be looking to make a return to the top four and Champions League. If they are to do so, it will be games such as these where they will have to pick up three points. An opening day draw at Leicester was a disappointing beginning, before a defeat to Newcastle raised further questions over the side’s outlook. Their latest loss was at home in the North London derby against a depleted Arsenal side.

Brentford have made a strong start to the season, with their only defeats coming against Liverpool and Man City. After a difficult season last year in which they were towards the bottom of the table for the majority of the campaign, there is a lot more optimism in the Bees’ camp. Despite the loss of Ivan Toney, Yoanne Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo have filled the void excellently so far. The pair combined for 21 goals last season, and have already bagged six this year. They should provide a great threat to a Spurs defence who have weaknesses that can be exploited.

In four games, the hosts have kept just one clean sheet, that coming against bottom side Everton. However, in attack they are capable of causing damage, especially at home. Heung-Min Son enjoyed an excellent campaign, scoring 17 goals. He has already brought that form into this year with two strikes already. He is supported by new £65m signing Dominic Solanke, who has yet to score his first goal, but provides a strong presence up top which was sorely missed last year.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford side have not kept a clean sheet, even though they have had a strong start. Opening the season with three consecutive away games at Liverpool, City and Tottenham is almost as hard as it gets. It will be tough to keep Spurs out, but if they are able to keep the game close, it could give their dangerous attack a chance to put pressure on at the other end.

Unsurprisingly, this is a fixture that has been dominated by Tottenham historically. In 48 total meetings, Spurs have enjoyed 25 wins to Brentford’s seven. However, it has been a different story in recent seasons since the Bees’ return to the top flight with six meetings taking place since their promotion in 2021. During this stretch, Spurs have won two games and Brentford have won once with three draws. Last season ended with a draw and a Spurs win, though there was very little to split them in either game. Spurs’ victory saw them come from behind to score three unanswered before Ivan Toney pulled one back to complete the 3-2 result.

          Team News

          Tottenham

Richarlison is hoping to return soon, but this game may be too early. Ange Postecoglou should have a fully fit squad to choose from otherwise.

          Brentford

Yoane Wissa was substituted before half-time in Brentford’s game against Man City and will be assessed. Gustavo Nunes and Josh Dasilva are not expected to return from injury until October and November respectively. Mathias Jensen is also ruled out for this game. Rico Henry is nearing a return this month, but this game should come too soon.

          Form Guide

          Tottenham:

In their last five games, Tottenham have won one, drawn one and lost three. It has been an inconsistent start to the season, ant this continued in the North London Derby which was their most recent game. They came up against an Arsenal side who had a few notable absentees, but were unable to break them down. Set-pieces were their undoing, with the only goal coming from a Gabriel header at a corner.

This followed a loss in their last game before the international break as they were defeated 2-1 at Newcastle. Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak scored either side of a Dan Burn own goal. Spurs were unable to carry on from the momentum they built with a 4-0 win over Everton in the game prior. They were dominant throughout with goals from Yves Bissouma, Heung-min Son (x2) and Cristian Romero.

The first game of the season saw them drop points against newly promoted Leicester City. They went in front through Pedro Porro, but were pegged back by Jamie Vardy shortly after the restart. The first game of this run was a final pre-season friendly against Bayern Munich. The Germans were 3-2 winners, despite the hosts taking a first minute lead.

          Brentford:

In their last five games, Brentford have won three and lost two. It has been a promising start to the campaign for the Bees, beginning with a 2-1 win at home to Crystal Palace. Bryan Mbeumo gave them the lead, before an Ethan Pinnock own goal levelled the score. Yoanne Wissa netted the winner with 14 minutes to go.

A tricky trip to Anfield followed, and the hosts proved too much for them as they lost 2-0. Luis Diaz and Mo Salah scored either side of half-time to condemn them to defeat. Attention shifted to EFL Cup action where they took on lower league Colchester away from home. They advanced to the third round with a 1-0 win thanks to a Keane Lewis-Potter strike on the stroke of half-time.

Before the international break they hosted Southampton, beating them 3-1. Wissa scored the third goal following an Mbeumo brace. The visitors scored a late consolation. Last time out, they faced a tricky trip to league leaders Man City. They suffered their second defeat of the season, losing 2-1. Wissa gave them the lead one minute in, but a brace from Erling Haaland turned it around.
