Tottenham currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, five points behind Arsenal and Man City, who sit third and second respectively. They are a point ahead of Aston Villa, who are one place below them. A win for Spurs would strengthen their grip in a top-four position, as well as keep them within touching distance of the teams above them. Whilst pushing their way into the title race is likely nothing more than a dream, their fans will be delighted to see them in such a position given the departure of Harry Kane and a significant turnover of playing and coaching staff prior to the season. However, a loss would open the door for Aston Villa to overtake them, or even allow sides such as Man United and Newcastle to close the gap.
The visitors, on the other hand, could maintain, or regain their position in the top 10, depending on other results, with a win at the weekend. Despite their recent loss at home to Brentford, they have enjoyed a solid campaign under Gary O’Neil, and are well clear of any relegation battles. They are three points behind Brighton in ninth, and sit one above Chelsea in 11th, who they beat 4-2 at Stamford Bridge last week. The Blues do have a game in hand, though.
Goals will be expected in this game, as both sides struggle to keep clean sheets. In their last three games, Wolves have scored seven but let in eight. Spurs similarly score plenty of goals but also let many in. They have not kept a clean sheet in the league since mid-December. Richarlison has emerged as a big goal threat, and Ange Postecoglou is boosted by the return of Heung-Min Son, so both defences will be tested.
Since Wolves were promoted back to the Premier League in 2018, the two teams have met 11 times, with nothing to split the pair. Wolves have been victorious on five occasions, as have Spurs, with the remaining fixture a draw. Spurs have had difficulties against this weekend’s opposition in recent years, losing three of the last four matchups. Their one victory came in December 2019 under Jose Mourinho, in which they scored a late winner through Jan Vertonghen after Adama Traore cancelled out Lucas Moura’s early opener.
The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in Wolves’ favour in rather dramatic fashion. Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham a very early third-minute lead, an advantage they held for almost 90 minutes. Pablo Sarabia thought he had salvaged a point for the hosts in the 91st minute, but Mario Lemina had other ideas as he sealed all three points in the seventh minute of stoppage time to break Spurs hearts.
