            Wolves vs Southampton Prediction

This is a huge game for both sides at the bottom of the table but we are backing the points to be shared in this one. Despite the hosts remaining winless in their previous nine in all competitions, Wolves have a relatively strong record against Southampton, winning the last five meetings.

Wolves are without a clean sheet in their last nine games, and although the Saints picked up their first victory of the season last weekend, they sit just a point ahead of their opponents in the table. Both teams have scored in the last nine involving the hosts and six of the previous eight involving the visitors, with a score draw a likely outcome between two sides struggling for consistency. Jorgen Strand Larsen has scored twice in his last three games, including the opener against Man City – Wolves 1-1 Southampton

Wolves vs Southampton: Preview & Prediction

Wolves host Southampton in a huge clash at the bottom of the table. Both sides have struggled immensely so far, though the visitors will be hoping to make it two wins in a row.

            Date: 09/11/24

            Kick-off time: 15:00

            Venue: Molineux

It has been a dreadful start to the Premier League season for Wolves as they are one of two teams yet to pick up a win. This leaves them bottom of the table with three points, and they face an early uphill battle to climb out of this mess. Gary O’Neil’s side have lost five of their last seven league games, but have picked up two consecutive draws in a sign they may be heading in the right direction. A first victory of the campaign could lift them within a point of safety and give them some much needed momentum heading into a crucial run of fixtures.

Southampton are their visitors and it has been a similar story for Russell Martin’s team. They finally picked up their first three points in a late 1-0 win over Everton last weekend. With four points, they are still in the relegation zone one place above their upcoming opponents. No team has lost more games than Southampton’s eight.

Both teams are amongst the bottom three in goals conceded. Wolves have by far the leakiest defence with 27 goals allowed, and Southampton have let in 19. The hosts have had greater success in front of goal with 14 scored, though the Saints have the fewest in the division with seven. Cameron Archer is their top scorer with two, summing up their offensive struggles.

This could give the edge to Wolves, who have some dangerous players confident of breaching the Southampton backline. Jorgen Strand Larsen and Matheus Cunha have netted four each, whilst Rayan Ait-Nouri has also contributed with three. They could be handed a big boost with the return of Hwang Hee-Chan, who scored 12 last season.

Historically, there has been nothing to split these two teams with 28 wins each and 18 draws. However, the head-to-head in recent seasons has been one-sided. Wolves have won all of the last five meetings in the Premier League, whilst Southampton have won just twice in all competitions against their opponents since 2007. Two seasons ago, Wolves did the double over the Saints with a 2-1 win away and 1-0 win at home.

            Team News

            Wolves

Wolves have a couple of long-term injuries with Sasa Kalajdzic and Boubacar Traore not expected back until the new year. However, they could be handed a boost with the return of Hwang Hee-Chan. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is also set for a return.

            Southampton

Ryan Fraser could make a return to the squad after a brief absence. Will Smallbone is further behind in recovery but is expected to be back by the end of this month. Long-term absentee Gavin Bazunu is the only other player who is out.

            Form Guide

            Wolves:

In their last five games, Wolves have drawn two and lost three. It has been an ongoing tough stretch for Wolves as they still search for their first league win. This run started with a difficult fixture at home to Liverpool in which they lost 2-1. Ibrahim Konate and Mo Salah scored either side of a Rayan Ait-Nouri equaliser.

They suffered another defeat the next week, this time a thrilling 5-3 game at Brentford. Brentford took the lead twice in the first 20 minutes, but were pegged back on both occasions by Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen. However, the Bees would instantly retake the lead once more before pulling away. Ait-Nouri scored a late consolation.

Another tricky home game against Man City followed, and despite taking the lead, a 95th minute John Stones winner condemned them to late heartbreak. Although they did not take home three points, they completed a huge comeback from 2-0 down at Brighton to salvage a point. Ait-Nouri and Cunha scored in the 88th minute and in stoppage time. Their most recent game followed the same scoreline at home to Crystal Palace. Both teams squandered leads, with Larsen and Joao Gomes on the scoresheet for Wolves.

            Southampton:

In their last five games, Southampton have won two, and lost three. It has been a difficult start to life back in the Premier League for the Saints but they finally recorded their first league win. This came in their most recent game at home to fellow strugglers Everton. Adam Armstrong scored the much needed winner in the 85th minute.

This followed another win as they advanced to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup. They beat Stoke 3-2 with goals from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Adam Armstrong and James Bree, who recorded the decisive strike after the side squandered a two-goal advantage.

Despite facing the champions Man City away from home, they came away with just a 1-0 defeat. Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the game. It continued a losing streak after they lost 3-2 at home to Leicester. They were defeated after giving up a 2-0 lead, ultimately losing to a 98th minute winner from Jordan Ayew. This run started with a trip to title challenging Arsenal. The Saints took a shock lead through Cameron Archer, but this did not last long as Kai Havertz levelled the score three minutes later. Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka secured the three points for the hosts.
