Montréal vs. Inter Miami: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

This Sunday, Major League Soccer presents a fascinating contest between two teams at opposite ends of the spectrum in the Eastern Conference standings. Montréal, the underdogs struggling for form, will host the frontrunners Inter Miami, who have been capturing imaginations with their star-studded squad. The clash promises an intriguing mix of styles and strategies at Stade Saputo in Montréal.

          Date: 12/05/2024

          Kick-off time: 00:30

          Location: Stade Saputo

Montréal find themselves in a precarious position, placed 11th in the Eastern Conference with a tally of 12 points from 10 matches. This start aligns poorly with the hopes of fans who anticipated more from a side that showed potential, despite finishing a modest 12th last season. The expectations were somewhat mixed, with the squad not viewed as major contenders, yet there was a latent hope that they might punch above their weight.

The appointment of Laurent Courtois as manager marked a strategic shift towards development, focusing on nurturing talent over immediate success. Courtois, while lacking extensive top-flight managerial experience, has been tasked with a long-term project at Montréal. This approach suggests the club is in a transitional phase, aiming to build a foundation for future competitiveness.

A significant part of Montréal’s strategy was the acquisition of Venezuelan striker Josef Martínez. At 30 years old, Martínez is a seasoned MLS performer known for his prolific scoring record. However, his integration into Montréal's setup has been slow, with only two goals in seven appearances, indicating a modest beginning to his tenure. The hope remains that Martínez will regain his best form and become the spearhead Montréal need to climb the table.

In stark contrast, Inter Miami have been the epitome of excellence in the early phases of the MLS season. Positioned at the top of the Eastern Conference with 24 points from 12 games, they are fulfilling the expectations of many who tipped them as potential champions. The team's success is underpinned by a blend of tactical nous provided by manager Tata Martino and the undeniable quality of a star-studded roster.

The presence of Lionel Messi has been transformational for Inter Miami. Alongside him, familiar faces from Barcelona days—Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba—have reintroduced their proven chemistry to MLS, making Inter Miami a formidable unit. The addition of young Argentine midfielder Fernando Redondo, regarded highly across Europe, further enhances their dynamic and provides a balance of experience and youthful energy.

Tata Martino’s leadership has been pivotal. Known for his tactical intelligence and ability to manage big personalities, Martino has moulded a cohesive and effective team. His expertise has maximised the potential of his squad, blending individual brilliance with collective effort.

Despite their current contrasting fortunes, the historical head-to-head record between Montréal and Inter Miami suggests a closer contest. Montréal have had the upper hand in recent meetings, securing three wins out of the last five encounters. Inter Miami have managed just one victory, with one match ending in a draw. This record could play a psychological role, potentially giving Montréal a psychological edge or inspiring Inter Miami to alter their historical disadvantages.

From a tactical standpoint, Montréal are likely to adopt a cautious approach. Given their defensive vulnerabilities and the attacking prowess of Inter Miami, Courtois might prefer a more conservative strategy, potentially deploying a compact defensive setup and looking to exploit counter-attacking opportunities.

Conversely, Inter Miami will be expected to control the game, utilising their technical superiority and intricate passing networks. The creative burden will largely rest on Messi, whose vision and precision remain unparalleled. The interplay between Messi, Suárez, and Busquets will be critical, as will their ability to unlock a resilient Montréal defence.

The upcoming fixture between Montréal and Inter Miami isn't just a regular league match; it's a clash of narratives, a test of tactical acumen, and a showcase of individual talents. While Inter Miami enter as favourites, the unpredictable nature of football, combined with Montréal's historical edge in this fixture, adds layers of intrigue to the encounter. As both sides prepare to face off, the broader implications for their season ambitions and tactical identities will be on full display, making this match a must-watch for MLS enthusiasts.

          Team News

          Montréal Team News:

Striker Josef Martinez is nursing a knock to his knee and will face a late fitness test to be involved here. Matias Coccaro and Kwadwo Opoku, however, will both remain on the sidelines.

Lassi Lappalainen and Joaquin Sosa are both doubtful.

          Inter Miami Team News:

Jordi Alba and Robbie Robinson will likely remain on the treatment table for this one while Federico Redondo is not likely to return from a knee injury until the end of this month at the latest.

Ian Fray and Facundo Farias are both unlikely to play again this season.

          Form Guide

Montréal's form is way off where it needs to be right now as they enter this game with one win, two draws and two losses from their last five outings. The Canadian side were hammered 4-1 at Nashville at the weekend where former Nottingham Forest striker Sam Surridge bagged a hat-trick to down the Impact.

The loss in Nashville was preceded by a 0-0 draw against Columbus Crew and a 2-2 draw against Orlando City, where the visitors netted a heartbreaking injury-time equaliser after goals from Mason Toye and Ariel Lassiter had given them a 2-1 lead.

Prior to that, Lassiter and Josef Martínez gave them a 2-1 win over Cincinnati which followed a 5-0 hammering at Seattle Sounders.

Inter Miami's form is in stark contrast to that of Montréal as they enter this game on fire, having won four and drawn one of their last five games. On Sunday, Inter put the New York Red Bulls to the sword in a comprehensive 6-2 win where Lionel Messi notched a goal and a ridiculous five assists (an MLS record), with three of the other five goals coming from Luis Suárez - alongside two from Matias Rojas.

That win followed a 4-1 win over the New England Revolution where a brace from Messi, in addition to a goal from Suárez and Benjamin Cremaschi, earned them a resounding win. This came after a 3-1 win over Nashville, with a Messi brace and a goal from Sergio Busquets, and a 3-2 win away at Sporting KC, courtesy of Messi, Suárez and Diego Gómez.

Inter Miami's other result in this five-game stretch was a 2-2 draw at home to Colorado Rapids, where goals from Messi and Leonardo Afonso were only good enough for a point.

          Footy Accumulators Prediction

It's tough to see this game going any other way than an Inter Miami win. These two teams are in vastly different positions with entirely contrasting aims for this season and the individual and collective quality of Inter Miami dwarfs that of the Canadians. We expect Lionel Messi and co to win and do so comfortably. Montréal 1-3 Inter Miami.
