Watford vs Southampton Preview, Tips & Stats

Vicarage Road hosts an all Championship Fourth Round FA Cup clash as Watford take on Southampton. Both sides have picked up a good haul of points in the Championship but will be looking for a good Cup run as well.

Watford currently sit ninth in the Championship after 28 games. The Hornets have ten wins, ten draws and eight losses, leaving them on 40 points, just three points from Coventry in the last Play-off place.

In their last five games in all competitions, Watford have two wins and three draws.

Jake Livermore opened the scoring for Watford before the 15 minute mark, but Ryan Mmaee equalised before halftime for Stoke. Despite going down to ten men with Vakoun Issouf Bayo being sent off early in the second half, Watford held on for a 1 - 1 draw. Five of the six goals in the clash with Plymouth Argyle came in the first half. Edo Kayembe opened the scoring for Watford but Finn Isaac Azaz equalised for Plymouth. Morgan Whittaker then gave Plymouth the lead, with Watford equalising this time through Ismael Kone. Ryan Hardie gave Plymouth the lead going into halftime but Ryan Andrews equalised early in the second half as the game finished 3 - 3.

In the Third Round of the FA Cup, Watford hosted Chesterfield. Joe Quigley gave Chesterfield the lead at halftime, but Mileta Rajovic and Tom Dele-Bashiru both scored in the second half to give Watford the 2 - 1 win. Back in the Championship, Watford took on QPR. A quick Livermore brace gave Watford the 2 - 0 lead, a big enough lead that Lyndon Dykes’ goal wasn’t enough to stop the 2 - 1 win for Watford.

The last time out for Watford was against Bristol City. A penalty from Dele-Bashiru gave Watford the lead but a goal from Scott Twine forced the 1 - 1 draw.

Southampton, on the other hand, currently sit third in the Championship. In 28 games, The Saints have 17 wins, seven draws and four losses which leaves them on 58 points, one point behind Ipswich Town and eight points behind league leaders Leicester.

In their last five games in all competitions, Southampton have four wins and one draw.

Carlos Alcaraz opened the scoring for Southampton ten minutes into the second half and Che Adams doubled The Saints’ lead just six minutes later. Hardie did get on the scoresheet for Plymouth Argyle in the 91st minute, but it wasn’t enough as Southampton won 2 - 1. Southampton took the lead in the 70th minute through Adam Arsmtrong but Josh Sargent equalised eight minutes later as the game ended 1 - 1.

In the Third Round of the FA Cup, Southampton hosted Walsall. A brace from Ryan Fraser and goals from Sekou Mara and Adams gave Southampton the 4 - 0 win. It was another 4 - 0 win for Southampton back in the Championship against Sheffield Wednesday. Adams, Armstrong, Fraser and Mara were all on the scoresheet for The Saints.

The most recent outing for Southampton was against Swansea. Adams and Will Smallbone gave Southampton the 2 - 0 lead, but Jamie Paterson got Swansea on the scoresheet. However, Flynn Downes scored to secure the 3 - 1 win for Southampton.

Watford and Southampton have met 88 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming all the way back in 1900. Southampton have the better record in the fixture with 38 wins in comparison to Watford’s 27 wins, the other 23 games ending in a draw.
