Consecutive relegations for Luton Town mean the Hatters are back in the third tier of English football for the first time in seven years. Matt Bloomfield will be given the chance to bring Luton Town back to the Championship, as his side opens the football season with a home tie against newly promoted AFC Wimbledon.
The Hatters have managed to retain Teden Mengi and Tahith Chong this summer, whilst admittedly they have lost the mercurial talents of Thelo Aasgaard to Rangers and stalwart goalkeeper Thomas Kasminski to Charlton Athletic. Matt Bloomfield's side has utilised the free agent market by signing Bristol City duo Kai Naismith and Nahki Wells, who could prove to be an excellent acquisition at this level.
Luton Town are the favourites for automatic promotion according to many experts, and the Hatters have enjoyed an excellent pre-season coming into this game. Luton Town have won four of their five pre-season outings and rounded it off with a 0-0 draw against a Tottenham Hotspur side featuring the likes of Brennan Johnson and Mohammed Kudus. Luton Town have been working on their defensive issues during pre-season, as the home side have not conceded in their previous three matches.
AFC Wimbledon secured promotion back to League Two with a win against Walsall at Wembley and will be hoping to make a good start, given their difficult opening task against Luton Town. The strength of Luton Town's squad compared to AFC Wimbledon's will be on show in this game, given the visitors' record of seven games without a clean sheet.
The recent record between the two sides favours Luton Town, as they are unbeaten in the last three meetings. We can only see a Luton Town win here, and with a clean sheet as well.
Luton Town 2-0 AFC Wimbledon.
