Port Vale vs. Wigan Prediction, Tips & Stats

Wigan Athletic are hoping to continue their ascent up the League One table this weekend as they face Port Vale.

Port Vale currently sit 17th in League One with six wins, four draws and nine losses from nineteen games this season.

It's been a pretty rocky campaign for a Port Vale side that look like they're carrying on from where they left off last season.

They're entering this game in awful form having won only one of their last twelve games in the league, losing three of their last five.

They did, however, take three points from their most recent league game as they ran out 1-0 winners against Exeter City, with loanee Oliver Arblaster netting the winner in the first half.

That win was sorely needed for Port Vale who were winless in eleven games heading into that encounter and they now have to hope that will act as a catalyst for a better run of form.

There will still be some real concern over their form at home coming into this one, though, given they've lost all of their last five games in the league on home soil.

They have a good opportunity to build on their three points last time out but any result here will be hard-fought as they face a well-put-together Wigan team.

Wigan Athletic currently sit 14th in League One with nine wins, four draws and seven losses from twenty games this season.

The Latics have been up and down this season in terms of form and while their league position is largely owing to their preseason points deduction there is still a feeling that they're not quite operating at their ceiling.

They're coming into this one in solid shape having gone unbeaten in their last five games having also lost just one of their last nine.

They have, though, won only two of their last five games and are entering this one fresh off the back of a 0-0 draw against Lincoln City.

Their form away from home is not particularly different, either, as they've won only one of their last five games on the road.

Wigan still have a lot of room to improve and certainly have the facilities to mount a serious playoff push but they need to nail down more consistency before that becomes a reality.

Three points here would go far for them and on paper it's definitely a game they should win.

For our Port Vale vs. Wigan prediction, we're going for a 2-1 win for the away side.

          Port Vale Team News

Conor Grant could be set for another spell on the treatment table after being forced off after only coming on as a sub in the FA Cup defeat to Stevenage in midweek.

James Wilson and Tom Conlon will both also miss out this weekend.

          Wigan Team News

Matt Smith won't be declared fit for this game but manager Shaun Maloney has confirmed that he's close to rejoining the fold in what will be a huge boost for the Latics following the midfielder's long-term absence.

While promising winger Martial Godo has swerved what at first looked like a serious injury he is set to spend 4-6 weeks on the sidelines so he'll play no part here.
