Portsmouth vs Shrewsbury Town Preview, Tips & Stats

Fratton Park hosts Portsmouth and Shrewsbury Town this Saturday in League One. Shrewsbury are looking to put some more room between themselves and the relegation zone whereas Portsmouth aim to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.

Portsmouth currently sit top of the League One table after 41 games. Pompey have 25 wins, 12 draws and four losses, leaving them on 87 points, five points above Derby in second.

In their last five games in all competitions, Portsmouth have three wins and two draws.

Despite the red card to Blackpool’s Jordan Rhodes in the 43rd minute, Portsmouth couldn’t take advantage of the extra man and convert any of their five shots on target as the game finished in a 0 - 0 draw. Portsmouth were back to winning ways against Burton Albion. A penalty from Kusini Yengi gave Pompey the lead at halftime and another goal from Yengi doubled their lead after the hour mark. John Brayford did score late for Burton but Portsmouth held on for the 2 - 1 win.

Yengi was on the scoresheet again for Portsmouth, this time against Peterborough. Yengi found the back of the net in the 77th minute with the only goal of the game in the 1 - 0 win for Pompey. There were early goals against Wycombe, Colby Bishop opened the scoring in the third minute but Matt Butcher equalised before the ten minute mark. However, another goal from Bishop and a goal from Christian Saydee gave Portsmouth the 3 - 1 win.

The last time out for Portsmouth was a big game at the top of the table against Derby County. Despite a first half double from Joe Ward both Abu Kamara and Owen Moxon scored to rescue a 2 - 2 draw for Pompey.

Shrewsbury Town, on the other hand, currently sit 17th in League One. In 41 games, The Shrews have 13 wins, seven draws and 21 losses which leaves them on 46 points, eight points above the relegation zone.

In their last five games in all competitions, Shrewsbury have two wins, two draws and one loss.

Shrewsbury opened the scoring early against Port Vale with Daniel Udoh scoring in the sixth minute. Tom Bloxham then doubled The Shrews’ lead early in the second half and despite the goal from Baylee Dipepa, Shrewsbury held on for a 2 - 1 win. However, the visit from Exeter City the next time out was one to forget for Shrewsbury. Jordan Shipley picked up a red card in the sixth minute and Will Aimson, Luke Harris and Jack Aitchison all scored to give Exeter the 3 - 0 win.

The Shrews bounced back against Carlisle. Udoh scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to give Shrewsbury the 1 - 0 win, despite having less of the possession. Billy Bodin opened the scoring early in the second half for Oxford United but with under ten minutes to go, Jack Price found the back of the net to grab a 1 - 1 draw for Shrewsbury.

The most recent outing for Shrewsbury was against Bristol Rovers. Shrewsbury had just one shot on target as both teams failed to score in the 0 - 0 draw.

Portsmouth and Shrewsbury have met 34 times in their histories, with the first meeting coming back in the 1910 FA Cup. Pompey have the better record in the fixture with 18 wins in comparison to Shrewsbury’s ten wins, the other six games ending in a draw.
