Shrewsbury are bidding to get their playoff charge back on track with the club failing to win any of their past two games in the last seven days as Morecambe heads to Montgomery Waters Meadow this Saturday afternoon as they aim to get further away from relegation.
Morecambe continued to get pushed and pulled all over the bottom six this season and with no more games in hand for them to play, they sit only three points above MK Dons down in 22nd and with a poor goals difference record that could see them dragged into the bottom three in next to no time.
The Shrimps have now let in 54 goals this season, and only four other clubs have a worse defensive record. At the same time, they've scored just 34 times in 35 games and come into this one with seven games won, 12 drawn and 16 lost. They were in action in midweek, and although they avoided a loss away from home, the club continued to be one of favourites to go down after a draw with 23rd-placed Cambridge United.
Prior to this, the 21st-placed club lost to Fleetwood Town 1-0 and drew with Bolton Wanderers too. It means the club are coming into this one without a win since defeating Port Vale midway through February by a narrow 1-0 scoreline at home. In fact, Morecambe have won only once on the road this season, which does not bode well against a Shrewsbury side bidding to get into the top six.
Shrewsbury were also in action in midweek with them losing 2-1 to Peterborough United just four days on from drawing 2-2 with Derby County. The club took the lead twice that day against the Rams, and it did look as if they would find themselves getting all three points and putting on the board their best and most important win of the season in regard to their own playoff march.
Now, Salop sit with no more games in hand to play and with them having to deal with Peterborough and Wycombe Wanderers having a game in hand to play just above them in the table. At the same time, they are now behind Derby in sixth by nine points and their hopes of getting into the playoffs have taken a huge hit recently. Nevertheless, it is still turning out to be a fantastic season for Steve Cotterill's side, given how they've not finished this high in League One before.
