For the first time in 12 years, Wycombe Wanderers will step out with Gareth Ainsworth after his move to Queens Park Rangers as Matt Bloomfield leads the club out with a trip to Shrewsbury Town up first for him.
Bloomfield spent practically his entire playing career at Wycombe and he joined the club as a first team coach at the start of last season before joining Colchester United in September of last year. Bloomfield would win just nine of his 28 games in charge of Colchester and lost 13 while drawing six. It equalled to a 32.1% win rate, although he did win the League Two Manager of the Month in January after rocketing the U's off the bottom of the table and out of the bottom four.
Ainsworth has left Wycombe with the club in seventh and on a fantastic win of five in a row ever since losing to Sheffield Wednesday five weeks ago. The club has gone on to beat Oxford United 2-0, Port Vale 3-0, Derby County 3-2, Accrington Stanley 2-0 and Bolton Wanderers 1-0 just last week.
It does make the club one of the most in-form sides in the league right now, while Wycombe's playoff charge has got life once more. They do have games in hand on some sides around them as well, and should they manage to win their two games in hand over Bolton in fourth, the club will be level on points with them.
Shrewsbury are directly behind Wycombe ahead of this one, despite them drawing with Exeter City 0-0 and losing to Accrington 1-0 last weekend. The club's last win came against Port Vale in a thrilling 3-2 win at Montgomery Waters Meadow. Salop are now into eighth, but they are behind Wycombe by five points, as quite a big gap continues to get created between the top seven and the rest of the league.
Steve Cotterill's men have also played one game more than Wycombe and if they want to get in the playoffs this season, a win here feels like a must to avoid the gap getting even bigger.
