Accrington Stanley host Sutton United at the Wham Stadium this Saturday in their eighth game of the League Two season. Both Accrington and Sutton haven’t had the start to the season they would’ve hoped for, so a win this weekend may be the way they kick start their season.
Accrington Stanley currently sit 15th in League Two after seven games. With three wins, one draw and three losses, Accrington have accumulated ten points. Though in the bottom half of the table, Accrington already has a good seven point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone.
In their last five games Accrington have three wins and two losses. These wins came against Harrogate Town, Salford City and Carlisle. Sean McConville opened the scoring for Accrington against Harrogate but Warren Burrell equalised late in the game after a red card to Seb Quirk. However, Jack Nolan popped up with a 98th minute goal to give Accrington the 2 - 1 win. Shaun Whalley and Josh Andrews gave Accrington the 2 - 0 lead going into halftime, a lead they held onto until Ryan Watson converted his penalty, but Accrington pushed for the 2 - 1 win. The final win came in the Football League Trophy against Carlisle where Accrington took the 1 - 0 win due to a Corey Whelan own goal.
Though Josh Andrews scored against Notts County, a goal from Daniel Crowley and a brace from Macaulay Langstaff gave Notts County the 3 - 1 win. Accrington’s last time out in League Two was against Mansfield Town. KD Davis, George Maris and Aaron James Lewis all scored in the blowout 3 - 0 win for Mansfield despite Accrington having more of the possession.
Sutton United, on the other hand, sit 23rd in the league and in the relegation zone. With just one win and six losses so far this season, Sutton are three points away from safety already and just one point from being rock bottom.
In their last five games, Sutton have one win and four losses. The one win came against Wycombe in the League Cup. Aiden O’Brien scored the only goal in the 1 - 0 win for Sutton. The first loss came against Wimbledon where Sutton suffered a 3 - 0 loss to goals from Ryan Johnson, Harry Pell and James Tilley. Newport also put three goals past Sutton with Omari Patrick on the scoresheet for Sutton as they lost 3 - 1. Harvey Bunker scored the only goal in Forest Green’s 1 - 0 win over Sutton.
Sutton’s last time out was a goalfest against Swindon Town. Craig Clay, Ben Goodlife and Harry Smith all scored, but it wasn’t good enough as Jake Young bagged a double and Jake Cain, Dan Kemp and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy all scored to give Swindon the 5 - 3 win.
Accrington Stanley and Sutton United have never met in a professional game, making this their first-ever meeting. Based on their form in the league, the win is most likely for the home side Accrington.
