Carlisle United vs. Stockport County Prediction, Tips & Stats

The League Two season finally concludes this weekend as Carlisle United face Stockport County in the play-off final at Wembley.

Carlisle reached the play-off final by Bradford City 3-2 on aggregate having won the second leg 3-1 on their own turf following a 1-0 defeat in the first leg.

The Cumbrians entered that game devoid of any serious form having won just one of their prior seven matches, so to say that result was unexpected could be an understatement.

However, they pulled a performance out of the bag when it was most needed and they'll be hoping they can take inspiration from that here as they face their biggest game in recent memory.

They finished 5th in the league table but had a poor end to the season and did not look primed to tackle these play-offs, but they now have the wind in their sails coming into what is the club's biggest game for some time.

There's a huge amount of pressure on The Cumbrians here as it could be a number of years before they find themselves in this position again should they be unsuccessful at Wembley.

Little was expected of Carlisle coming into the campaign but what an opportunity they now have. It's all or nothing for Paul Simpson and co, let's hope they don't fumble it.

Stockport County reached the play-off final by beating Salford City 3-1 on penalties in the semi-final following a 2-2 draw on aggregate.

Stockport began the season in awful form but ruthlessly rectified their underwhelming start and powered towards a top six finish, eventually finishing 4th in the table after making a serious push for automatic promotion.

They're coming into this game in very good form having lost just one of their last fifteen matches while also winning three of their last five.

Stockport can take a lot of confidence from the fact they're unbeaten in their two games against Carlisle this season having beaten them 2-0 on home soil before drawing 2-2 at their place.

This is an extremely difficult game to call and there's a good chance we could be in for a cagey encounter.

The bookmakers are struggling to separate these two in terms of the odds and you can see why, so let's hope for a entertaining game and may the best team win.

For our Carlisle vs. Stockport prediction, we're going for a 2-1 win for Stockport.

          Carlisle Team News

Ben Barclay, who needed the winner in extra-time against Bradford to take Carlisle to Wembley, is unfortunately ineligible to face his parent club.

Jon Mellish is available for selection once again after serving a suspension while Kristian Dennis is now fit and also available for selection.

          Stockport Team News

Top scorer Kyle Wootton remains doubtful having missed the last six games through injury while Antoni Sarcevic will hope to play a bigger role here after featuring off the bench against Salford following a long spell on the sidelines.

Other than Wootton, Stockport have a fully fit squad to choose from here with Myles Hippolyte and Ryan Croasdale both possibly coming into the starting XI.
