Colchester vs Crewe Prediction, Tips & Stats

The Colchester Community Stadium is the venue for a vital game in the League Two relegation battle as Colchester are set to host Crewe on Easter Monday.

The home side find themselves well and truly embroiled in a relegation scrap at the bottom of the Football League. The U’s are currently occupying 21st place in the league and are just one point above Hartlepool and Crawley, meaning that a loss here could see Colchester enter the relegation zone.

Colchester’s recent form has been plagued by draws and the U’s are without a win in their last nine league games, in which they have drawn five. This run has included defeats against promotion-chasing opposition in the form of Bradford, Northampton, Stockport and Carlisle.

Last weekend, Colchester were held to a home draw against Newport County in a game that was devoid of many goal-scoring chances. Kieran O’Hara came to Colchester's rescue late on in the game as he brilliantly kept out Mickey Demetriou’s effort.

The U’s were held to yet another draw on Good Friday as they managed to prevent promotion-chasing Stevenage from taking all three points. Connor Hall gave Colchester an early lead within the first 20 minutes of the game however Stevenage’s pressure ultimately paid off as they found a reply in the second period thanks to Alex Gilbey.

Crewe look to be destined for another year in League Two as they currently find themselves in 16th place in the table. The Railwaymen look to have avoided any relegation drama as they are currently ten points above the relegation zone, with just seven games left in their campaign.

Lee Bell’s side come into this weekend following impressive back-to-back wins. Last weekend, the Railwaymen recorded a 2-0 victory over Doncaster thanks to two quick successive first-half goals from Courtney Barker-Richardson and Connor O’Riordan.

The Railwaymen were able to follow up this victory on Good Friday as they recorded their joint biggest win of the season, putting three. past Barrow. A pair of Dan Agyei penalties in the first half was followed up by a Chris Long strike late on.

Crewe recorded a narrow victory when these sides met earlier on in the campaign. The Us were left to rue missed chances while some inspired goalkeeping from Arthur Okonkwo kept the Railwaymen in contention. The visitors were made to pay for the miss as they were hit on the counter, with Tariq Uwakwe driving down the left and crossing for Agyei to head a far-post finish in the 80th minute.

Somewhat surprisingly given these sides’ recent form, it is Colchester who are odds on favourites ahead of this clash @ 19/20, whilst an away win for Crewe is currently priced @ 14/5 and a draw is @ 23/10.

We are backing a draw and both teams to score as both of these sides have been recording many draws in what is a very nervy run-in to the end of the season. Colchester have drawn their past four successive league games, whilst Crewe have the most draws in League Two this year having drawn 15 of their games.

            Colchester Team News

Colchester have not reported any new injury concerns ahead of this weekend. Ben Garner is unlikely to ring the changes to the side that drew to Stevenage last time out, with Freddie Sears and Tom Hopper leading the U’s attacking line.

            Crewe Team News

Chris Long will be pushing for a place in the starting XI after he came in as a substitute during Crewe’s last two league outings. Long has missed the majority of the season due to an ankle injury but proved his worth last season as he was the Railwaymen’s top scorer in League One and netted in Crewe's 3-0 win against Barrow last time out.
